Septate hymen

hi everybody

so i'm 99% sure i have a septate hymen. i tried to use a tampon a couple months ago and i could put it in, however when i tried to take it out it hurt a lot. i had to get a mirror and look at what was wrong and there was a vertical band of skin stopping the tampon from coming out.

i figured it was nothing to worry about and so i didn't tell my mum but i've become sexually active and i'm worried because my boyfriend and i tried to have sex yesterday and he was trying to put it in but every time he tried to put it in it hurt way to much and i flinched and moved away from him by reflex. it was hurting a lot and even afterwards it was stinging a lot and so i was trying to stick up with it because i figured if it was my hymen then i couldn't avoid it hurting when i have sex for the first time. we ended up not being able to do it because it hurt too much and now i'm too scared to talk to my mum about going to the doctors about having it removed but i really want to see if i can get it surgically cut off.

it sounds as though i want it gone purely for sex reasons but i'm a very active person compared to my friends at school and i do a lot of paddlesports and swimming which i can't wear a pad for, so i want to use tampons but i can't for obvious reasons and i'm worried it's going to cause some kind of infection with blocking clots from coming out when i'm on my period.

does anybody have any advice for me about if i can get a surgery in the uk, if it would cost anything and if so how much? also about how to tell my mum that i think i have it.

thank you in advance

Just keep practicing with your boyfriend until he eventually breaks your hymen it will eventually break, if it hurting you then try being more relax as this may help.

Talk to your mum about it by saying that you think you might have a double heymen due to difficulties in having sex with your boyfriend.

Also if you are under age then you shouldn't be having sex.

If not discuss the matter with your GP and they will tell you about it.

thank you, i'll keep trying and don't worry i'm 16! i'm thinking i might speak to my mum in a few weeks after i have my next period because i want to try and use a tampon again to see if i have any way to just avoid it and use tampons anyway and if not i'll see if she can drive me to the GP
I had a septate hymen. Tampons hurt a lot but were still manageable. Sex hurt the first time (stinging feeling like you describe, both during and for a few days after) but was fine thereafter. Use lots of lube, do plenty of foreplay and accept that there's going to be pain but it will be brief. If you are still struggling despite trying this, do see your GP, of course, but be aware you will probably have to wait for a very long time to see a specialist. Good luck.
Some septate hymens can bleed a lot during first time sex. See a doctor.

hey!! so i’m currently on the waiting list for the first initial gynae appointment, and then surgery and i was also very nervous so i hope this puts ur mind at ease!! essentially you can just go to ur normal gp and explain to them the situation. (you can go without your mum or request to see a female doctor) they will probably pop you on the bed and have a look at what you are describing. once they’ve done that, they will confirm it’s a septate hymen and refer you to the hospital gynaecologist. they don’t ask any questions about your sex life, apart from maybe ‘is there a chance you could be pregnant’ which you can ofc say no too. the waiting time from the doctors appointment to the first gynae one is unfortunately very long which i understand is sooo frustrating. it is possible to use a private hospital, however this costs upwards of £1000 but can be done in months instead of years. i hope this has put ur mind at rest a little!!! good luck!! xx
