A-Level Physics Specialisation

I'm currently in Year 11 hoping to do Physics at A-Level, I know you can specialise in certain topics for Paper 3 (Astrophysics, medical, engineering, turning points & electronics). I'm hoping to do a BSc Software Engineering degree at uni (don't know which one yet) to go on to either a software engineering or games development career, so I'm guessing engineering would help with that, but I have a passion for astrophysics and it's my favourite topic in physics.

Does what I choose to specialise in affect my chances of getting into the course, or does it not matter?

Engineering in the context of Physics is completely different from Engineering in the context of Software.

From the options you list, I'd say Electronics is going to be the most relevant (and engineering one of the least), but I really doubt what you choose makes any difference in terms of getting into the course.

Oh okay, that's good to know. I'd probably look at electronics and astrophysics and see what's best for me. Thanks.

You might want to check that your 6th form/ College actually allow you to chose which option you pick. I’m in year 13 at the biggest A-level college in the country with over 2 thousand students in a year yet we have to do turning points in physics option because its a waste of college resources and it will mess up our timetables (what they said to me 😂).

My school definitely does, I checked the specification and one of the topics listed in Year 13 is “Option”, so I’m not sure if they have all of then but they definitely let you choose.
