Seeking Advice: Portfolio Requirements for MArch Architecture Application

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well! I recently applied for the MArch Architecture course for the 2024/2025 intake at Coventry university and I received a conditional letter of offer that requires me to submit a portfolio. I'm excited about this opportunity, but I could use some guidance on what exactly the portfolio should contain and in what format.

I understand that the portfolio is a crucial part of the application process, allowing tutors to assess my skills and potential as an architecture student. However, I'm unsure about the specifics of what they're looking for.

From what I've gathered, the portfolio should showcase a diverse range of work that highlights my design abilities, creativity, and experiences in architecture. But beyond that, I'm not entirely sure what types of projects or materials should be included.

Could anyone who has gone through a similar application process share their insights? What did you include in your portfolio, and how did you decide what to include? Additionally, any tips on the format or presentation of the portfolio would be greatly appreciated.

for MArch prioritise work from your previous practice experience and undergraduate degree
check this article for more info, but key points:

•

keep your portfolio concise, 10-20 pages max (this is because you have limited time in an interview)

•

show a wide variety of skills such as rendering, modelmaking, sketching, photography

•

include some GA and technical drawings that you have done while working, if you have them

Coventry's portfolio advice (bear in mind this may be targeted more towards undergraduates without a lot of actual architectural drawing experience) says they want to see 'expressive and technical drawings of exterior and interior of spaces and places showing spatial understanding. Model making/3-D experience of any sort demonstrating scale and volume, these can be very simple in construction, be playful and innovative and photograph well'.

ask the university directly about presentation format if you are unsure, as it varies from uni to uni.
