Budgeting at University:

Whilst at university you naturally pick up budgeting tips and how to manage your money. Though here’s a few tips so you can make the most out of your time without breaking the bank.

1. Track your expenses: Start by keeping track of all your expenses. Whether it's a fancy coffee or a textbook, write it down. This way, you'll have a clear picture of where your money is going and where you might need to cut back.

2. Create a budget: Once you know your expenses, create a budget that outlines your income ( like part-time jobs or student loans) and your planned expenses. Be realistic and allocate funds for essentials like rent, food and bills, as well as for social activities.

3. Prioritise your spending: It's important to prioritize your spending based on your needs and goals. Make sure to cover your essential expenses first before splurging on non-essential items.

4. Cook at home: We all love a takeaway or meal out but this can quickly eat up your budget. Consider cooking your meals at home instead of eating out regularly. Cooking with friends or flatmates can also be a fun way to bond and keep food costs down.

5. Take advantage of student discounts: Many businesses offer student discounts, from clothing stores to movie theaters. Always carry your student ID or download student beans/UNiDAYS.

6. Shop smart: When it comes to shopping for textbooks or other supplies, explore second-hand options or online marketplaces where you can find cheaper alternatives. Personally I just use library books so don’t have to splash out unnecessarily.

7. Plan your social activities: Going out with friends is a big part of the university experience, but it can also be expensive. look for free or low-cost events on campus or in your city. Movie nights, game nights, or exploring local parks are great alternatives that won't break the bank.

8 A student job is perfectly feasibly at uni, whether this be in a cafe, restaurant, bar or at local events. 0hour contract work with agencies are also great!

Remember, budgeting is all about finding a balance between managing your expenses and enjoying your time at university. If you’re worrying about money before you even start uni, use the finance calculator to estimate how much maintenance loan you’ll get
