More random accomodation info (Stamford St mainly)

I just went to King's today to check out the Waterloo campus (my subject is taught there) and thought I'd see the Stamford St apartments too. The 'manager' there, Tom Elfwick (for all you guys already at KCL) said that for this year there is a brand new system for designating accomodation.

Apparently it takes into account your preferences but also assigns you a random number and then you get allocated somewhere (so some of it is random and some of it is actually based on your preferences). Somehow, its supposed to be more accurate though

He also said that whilst priority is given to those outside the M25 ring (like me  ), there were still numerous people who were living at Stamford St (the most oversubscribed halls). I think he was talking about 1st years too - not people returning in their 3rd year. once again I'm confused  but seeing as he's the manager, I would've thought he'd have the lowdown on it. I've also heard that if you get a corner apartment then you have twice the room!

Anyway, I hope in some way that helps (not sure how, it'll prob just confuse you more) but I didn't see the bedrooms and I've heard they're quite over-rated. plus even though its single + ensuite - you still might share the kitchen with 8 people (but I think 4-7 is more usual)

I don't like the word "random" and "my house" in the same sentence... :frown:

*panics*

Thanks for the info..

Hi,

The computer allocation system basically takes into account all of your preferences (single or mixed sex apartment etc, which hall you would most like to be in), also gives you a priority level (so you are given a lower priority if you live within the M25) and tries to match it to a space in halls. So if you put Stamford Street down as your first choice, it will try and find a space there which matches your preferences. If it can't find one there, then it will try in your second-preference hall etc. etc.

I personally think the halls are very nice... I lived here for two years as a
King's student (my first and third years) and really enjoyed myself. I was really impressed when I first came down to London (back in 99) because the only other halls that I'd seen were my brother's dilapidated ones in Leeds. It's definitely an advantage having your own bathroom, it's really good to have your own fridge as well....the only downside that I could see as a student was that the rooms aren't huge... but definitely big enough to live in comfortably.

Waterloo is a fantastic place to live, it's really come up a lot in the last 5 years. There's loads of bars, pubs and restaurants around, it's really close to get into college and town, and the river is the best thing in London.

Hope that helps,

Tom Elphick

Thanks for the info, but it is not random as you surely intended to post it
Hey Tom, you remembered when I asked you to post on this site! Thanks for the info.

However, you said that everyone gets allocated a random number and if there aren't any spaces for places to match your preferences, then you may be given one of your lower choices.

I suggest you guys put down your preferences explicitly. This sounds obvious but I'll spell it out anyway - for example, if you want to go to Brian Creamer House/The Rectory, which is for single rooms (I chose these just to help out people other than Stamford St wannabes), then don't tick the box on the form saying that you are prepared to share a room.

What did you choose in the end Dreama?

I want to put Stamford down as 1st choice, but I'm afraid that if I do and get rejected I'll end up at Kings College Hall or somewhere where I really don't want to be.

Soooo tempted to follow Kingslaw and put Brian Creamer House as first choice!
i put stamford street as first choice too, although the size of the rooms (judging from the student 360 site) looks a little on the small side.
2nd choice was BCH, 3rd Connaught Hall (looks really nice!), 4th International, 5th Nutford House, 6th Hughes Parry and hopefully shouldnt have to worry about the rest of the choices!

i actually trekked down to London during Easter to take a look at the halls, how keen am I eh?

Coolness. What were your impressions of the intercollegiates? Looking at the website, International looks good, and Nutford seems nice and right near Hyde Park/ Oxford Street. Guess you need to visit them to get a better idea!

connaught is in a really nice area-seemed quite posh and certainly one of the affluent areas of london. big hotels nearby and plenty of amenities in terms of shops, etc (but looked quite touristy)

ditto for international- v close to russel sq. tube station (1 minute walk) but kind of a dodgy looking shopping centre nearby- may be disused cos couldnt see anything open this was midday on a monday).

yes, Nutford's proximity to hyde park is v.attractive to me too. Brian Creamer House also has some greenery next door , IIRC. and its quite close to the Houses of Parliament which is quite cool, just on the other side of the Thames.

But for proximity to the campus, Stamford Street is literally across the road from the Waterloo campus.

how hard is it to socialise in the stamford street apartments? And does the place, like Great Dover Street Apartments, have a common room, study areas and the like?

cheers. It'd really help to answer those questions, im sending the thing off in a couple of days, and i doubt i'll be able to visit.
good point, i need to send mine off as well. does anyone know the closing date?

I got mine ages ago, and I haven't bothered sending it back. It isn't solely about sharing rooms, if you look it also has something about being on single sex floors, or something like that. I think if you've said you're prepared to share, then you'd send it back, telling them all your unsocial habits, but otherwise, unless you want to be on a single sex floor/somewhere where you can smoke, you don't have to send it back.

That was my impression anyway!
