yer the generational gap would mean most were probably grammar schools, but not really private
the grammar school system allowed for a lot better social climbing than the current system. Id hazard a guess quite a few were

In a sense, but it also condemned half the population to a fate at age 11, for a long time if you went to a comp you wouldn't be allowed to go to university. And more recently, grammar schools have become a staple of the middle classes, using them to save money on school fees by coaching for the 11+ or paying for a few years of private primary school.

The proportion of state school acceptances to oxbridge is much higher now than at any time in history, despite there being very few grammar schools. http://www.parliament.uk/commons/lib/research/briefings/snsg-00616.pdf I like the bit in that where it says in the 1850s you could get a scholarship to cambridge if you went to a 'cheaper' boarding school.

Ah, but Ben Green is actually a full professor, not just a lecturer.
We only have 4 or 5 professors.
