Hi Nuradin

I wondering if you can answer a question for me? I have my entrance test for Middlesex on Saturday.

I have read several items that are contradictory.

The numeracy, you mention drop rates, I dont know anything about this?

Secondly the literacy is it just the 400 word essay on a given subject or a multiply choice comprehension?

Many thanks

Hi
Hope your test on Saturday went well.
Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the content of the test and interviews.
I am happy to answer questions relating to my experience as student at Middlesex University.

This week has been less busy than lastweek for me. I had done 37.5 hours of placement. Worked on Monday (Earlyshift=8am-4pm), Tuesday (Early shift =8am-4pm), Wednesday (Long day =8am-8pm)and Thursday (Long day =8am-8pm). As I have already stated in my previousweekly updates that I am enjoying this placement as it relates to my OSCEassessment which is in the middle of May this year. Therefore, I do not mindhow many hours I spend at this placement; every hour that I am at thisplacement is an opportunity for me to enhance and practice my assessmentskills. Furthermore, this placement is aperfect clinical experience relating to combining physical and mental healthnursing. In the near future, I would like to become a professor in nursing andas you might have read in the new curriculum in nursing will be changing inEngland. No matter what branch of nursing that one wants to do, all the nursingstudents will have to study together for two years and then in their finalyear, students will be able to choose a specific branch of nursing. I thinkthis new proposal will be in operation next two to three years. This has beenproposed for many years by the NMC because the mental health nurses tend to beignorant in relation to physical health problems and similarly the adult nursestend to be ignorant in relation to patients’ mental health needs. Therefore, for me to be able to teachnursing students from different branches of nursing, I would need now theclinical experience in physical health issues. Many of the service users, weare referred as Crisis Resolution Home Treatments, have already been to A&Eprevious night or previous day. They have presented to A&E, not because oftheir mental health illness but it could be more likely to do with physicalhealth issues. Thus, whenever we visit a service user that has been referred tous we also explore their physical health issues and if they have medicalconditions that might be leading to their mental health crisis. Therefore, partof my plan for this week was for me to work with a psychiatrist- a medicallytrained doctor with specialist experience in mental health illnesses. Therefore, this week has particularly different from the last four weeks as mymentor was on annual leave; therefore, I had the opportunity to work with otherprofessionals. As nurses we are required to work with other professionals suchas social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. On Monday this week I was allocated towork with one of the psychiatrists. I went with him for his home visits.Normally, the consultant psychiatrists attend the most complex cases- thatnurses and junior doctors are unable to manage and they also they do themedical review in terms of medications. On Monday, this particular consultanthad seen three service users and all required medical reviews. We explored withthese service users diagnosis and how they could best be managed. On Wednesday and Thursday this week, Iwas given the opportunity to work with a senior social worker with assessmentsteam. The social worker actually has similar role as the metal health nursesbut they have specialist knowledge in relation with dealing with service userswith children and they provide and expertise to team in term of dealing withsocial services and the local authority. This was special clinical experiencefor me as I am more to side of social issues in terms of mental healthdiagnosis. There are various models of treatment in term of mental healthillnesses such as the medical model, social model and the psychological model.I am a fan of the social model in terms of treatment of mental health issues. Ithink the causes of mental illness are more related to social issues and socialstressors.

Hi Hannahlousise 18,
Thanks for your questions and congratulations on your offer at Middlesex University. Middlesex University is well known to their nursing courses, the support their lecturers provide, and the warm welcome that the university provides. The University's nursing course is well established and above 90% graduates are employed as nurses. Middlesex University prioritises employability above all other things and they want to ensure that you gain the clinical experience required as a nurse and as you might have noticed that nursing is hands on jobs in other words it is a practical profession. The nursing course at Middlesex University is part of the Health and Education School which is the second largest school at the university. Once you finish your adult nursing course, here at Middlesex University, they offer scholarship for you to study at MSc Nursing level or 50% discount of the fees if you do your degree with us. I chose Middlesex University because they have only one campus in London (Hendon), so if you think about Middlesex University you think about Hendon Campus. I hate to travel from one campus to another! It has gym onsite, and modern buildings, which includes buildings specific for the nursing students.I also chose Middlesex University as I am not good at academic writing but Middlesex University provides Learning Enhancement Team (LET) where they provide support for academic writing and they also have workshops about how to write dissertations. Finally, Middlesex University Nursing course is performing very well in terms of NHS London funding compared to other London universities. This is my second year at Middlesex, and looking back when I had offers from three four universities and I was not sure which university to choose, I am glad that I chose Middlesex because the support I am receiving is excellent. As you might already know that studying nursing course is not an easy option. Because you will be at placement at the same time you are expected to be studying for your assignment, hence I suggest you choose a University that can provide that support.I also recommend you visit Middlesex University on one of our open days if you have not done so. Please if you have specific questions do not hesitate to ask me.I hope this helps and that you will be able to join us at Middlesex University. NuradinNursing Course AmbassadorMiddlesex University

This week started with relaxing Monday a family time and an exercise of 10 miles running. Tuesday long day (8am-8pm) with CRHT clinicalplacement; and this consisted of an early shift- I worked with assessment team-and a late shift with Home Treatment Team. On Wednesday, I attended our Trust recruitment event in themorning- from 9am-12pm- and in the afternoon-from 2pm-8pm- with CRHTT mycurrent placement. In my placement, I had the opportunity to lead three of thevisits. On the shift, we had 6 home visits. I was given one hour to read aboutthese three service users clinical notes and also we had to plan these visits.Part of this planning includes arranging place of visit and speaking to the service user over the phone informing them what time we planning to meet them. Also part of the planning includes preparing medications for the service usersthat was allocated to me and reading about any plans that has been maderegarding their care. The recruitment event was very useful and we have been givenconditional offer for three preferred positions. This conditional offer is thatwe had to visit our nurse training and there will an informal meeting with ourline managers but no interviews. I also had training in the afternoon with CRHT. Thistraining was about Enablement in mental health. The manager of the project ofthe enablement attended and led the training. This is a new project to thetrust and there are psychologists from Middlesex University who will be workingwith the project manager. The aim of this project is to keep people in thecommunity. The logo of the project is live love and does (Striving towardsshared vision). On Thursday, I attended Depot Clinic in the community. TheDepot Clinic is specialist mental health nursing clinic for those service userswith mental health illness who live in the community. It is to do withinjections mainly antipsychotic medications and these are long term medicationsand that these service users had to attend the clinic every two to four weeks.I was able to give 6 injections on the day and also planning to go back therein two weeks’ time to get more experience. Friday I was off but a bank shift on the psychiatric wardsas I would like to work in the in-patient psychiatric unit once I qualify. The weekend was all about assignments and university coursework, preparing my essay, which is due, in June 2016.

This week was my fifty week of placement. I had been workingwith my mentor from Monday (early shift=8am-4pm), Tuesday (long day=8am-8pm),Wednesday (long day =8am-8pm) and Thursday (long day). I did not go toplacement on Friday because I already covered the required hours for the week;however my mentor was working on Friday. As a nursing student, we are supposedto work with our mentors 40% of placement hours.Because I was able to spend more than 40% with my mentor, she gave me 30 minutes session with her’ even though we were not planning tomeet up this week. We decided to sit together and discuss my progression interms of learning objectives. So far I achieved almost all of my learningobjectives, except one. This coming week, I am expected to lead the shiftplanning meeting. This includes allocating cases to the team members. The teammembers consist of consultant psychiatrist, duty team manager, team manager, specialty doctor, senior band 6 nurse (my mentor), GP trainee, associate mentalhealth worker, support workers, students (nursing students including myself, medical students and social work students). During the weekend, I was planning what I need to do inrelation to this presentation as I am not particularly good at presentationsand I can become very nervous. However, my mentor promised that she will behelping me and will be providing support, and this reassured me. Also, she hadoffered me the opportunity for me to practice this and had asked me to comeearly before the meeting so that I can practice with her. In addition, my mentor’s expectations were very high thisweek. For example, she allowed me to lead a joint discharge meeting. This ismeeting of care transfer. Our service is temporary service normally up to fourweeks, but we do no abandon service users, rather we try and allocate thosethat we are discharging from our service to a care coordinator. This carecoordinator will be able to work with and support the service user in a longterm bases. As you might already know that mental health diagnosis is a longterm condition like diabetes and people learn how to manage and live asuccessful life. Unfortunately, my current placement only provides a temporaryintervention to those who are in crisis and once their crisis situation is over, our service terminates as well. In terms of practical work, I initially contacted carecoordinators to arrange time and date via email, and also during our normalhome visits I informed my service users that we are planning to discharge themand transfer their care to their care coordinator. In the meeting, I took notesand the plan that we agreed with the service user and the care coordinator. Also,I did discharge summary, this will consist of the care that we provided to thisparticular service user while they were under our care and what we achievedwith them. In the discharge summary contains crisis plan in terms of relapse inmental state. Overall, this week has been productive week for me, as I wasalso able to attend interprofessional event at Middlesex University. Thissession was about Mental Health Assessment and had about 90 people attendingit. I enjoyed this session as it was mostly group discussion and the sessionwas led by three senior lecturers and one of them was director of the programmesfor the nursing course at Middlesex University. y

Hi all,
Thanks for your questions and congratulations on your offer at Middlesex University.
Currently, I am unable to answer your questions. I am a PGdip nursing student and our timetable is different than the BSc nursing, but I sent an email to the programme leader for BSc course.
I did 3 days a week in my first year and 2 days a week in my second year.
I will update you once I get a reply from the programme leader.
However, so far this is the information I know: three modules in the first year =three days a week attendance at the university.
Placements are North Middlesex Hospital, Royal Free Hospital, Whittington Hospital, and also in the community with those trust areas.
Hope that helps.
If I receive a reply from programme leader, I will update.

Hi Nuradin

I have a few questions to ask regarding student finance, accommodation and the course I have applied for.

I have received an offer from Middlesex University to study Adult Nursing this September 2016, so I am in the process of deciding which University's to go for.

I just wanted to know what sort of finance am I able to apply for which will support me throughout the three years. As researched I am aware that this Univerisity enables students receive a £1,000 grant with an additional means tested bursary, so I just wanted to know how do I go about that?

Also I will be moving out from home so therefore I am considering an accommodation through the University and I was wondering whether I am able to apply for the accommodation in the new Unite Olympic way and whether this is ideal for a student nurse. And in terms of expense is this ideal too? I also wanted to know how far this is to from the Hendon campus (as this is where I am based).

In terms of the course I have applied for, I just wanted to know where about would the placements be based and would it be far from where I would live? Also I wanted to know whether this University offer placements to study abroad for students studying adult nursing?

Hope to hear from you soon!

With kind regards

This is a taste of what I was doing this week, first sessionis about my placement which occupies most of my hours of the week, the secondsession is about a goodbye article that I read about a professor of nursing, who retiring from his role. This week has been an exciting and a challenging week as Iwas expected to do my presentations within the MDT. However, I was unable tocarry out this because unexpected workload as a colleague of our was off sick, however, I was able to assist my mentor to prepare the presentations to theteam. Therefore, this presentation ofmine has been rescheduled for next week.As it is my seventh week of placement, I only have one moreweek to go. So, I was getting ready to make sure I get all the things that Ineeded to be signed before, I finish this placement. Also, I was expected toprepare myself my final week of my placement. I have already prepared presentsfor my mentor and the team to say good bye and the teams normally prepare forstudents good ceremony my last day for this next week will be on Thursday as Inormally do not work on Fridays. I have really enjoyed this placement and it issad that I have to say good to goodbye to them and the team has been excellentand really learnt a lot of experiences. Also, another challenge I had this week was that I wasexpected to lead all the meeting that we had with our service users. My mentorlet me organise all the meetings that we supposed to have and she was onlysupervising me and I was actually doing her job, and note that she is a band 6nurse. This was a challenge for me, because I had a lot of responsibility ofensuring that I know what I was doing and I was not expected to be askingquestions rather I was expected to demonstrate independence as I am close to mygraduation at the moment. I have had a good feedback from mentor, the onlything that I forget to do is I missed a service user who was supposed to havedepot injection, but likely I remembered before we finished our shift and I wasable to solve it and my mentor reassured me that it can be given next day, butinsisted that I should do it on the day, which I did. This was second depotinjection for the week. I also this week I did one long day with my mentor on theassessment team. My mentor normally does not work with the assessment teamrather she leads the home treatment teams. These are the patients that willstay with us and they are the patients that we have taken on our case loads. These patients are in our services and that anything that happens to them weare responsible for them therefore we normally have contacts with them everyday or every other day. We normally supervise their medications and monitortheir mental state. However, the assessment team have different role than we doand they are the crisis team. They take the initial referral and see thereferred patients within 4 hours either in the patients GP or patients ownaccommodation. Also, the good news for me for this week was the fact that Iwas given excellent in my assessment book. I was also able to approach one ofmy service users who I have been looking after for the last two weeks, she hasimproved in terms of her mental state. When she was referred to us she was incrisis; however, this week we were thinking about discharging her. She hadreally improved in terms her mental state, she is now able to functionindependently, and that she has been going to gym and has been attending mentalhealth charity classes. This is really improvement compared to her firstpresentations- and that time we were thinki8ng of admitting her in apsychiatric hospital but this could have led her mental state deteriorating. Our intervention had worked for her very well and that shewas really thankful for the help that he had been offering to her.On the other hand, I read an article written by professor ofnursing Len Bowers as he is retiring from the profession. In this article hetalked about how he came to nursing. He also mentioned how his careerprogressed through nursing. He did all types of nursing, diploma, degree, masters, and PhD; and he was still nursing while he was doing his job as anurse and was studying part-time at University. This article was motivationalfor me because when professor Len was doing all these there were fewopportunities in professorship in the nursing career, however, nowadays, thenumber of nurse professors increased and it is much easier to apply one andthis is what I want to do in my career. neJ֙A
