Cambridge seems massively overhyped to me, people seem to think going to cambridge will automatically land you a 100k a week job upon graduation

£100k a week?

What are they, footballers?

100k...a week? lol no. 100k per annum is definitely doable. Not a week.

It seems to be glamorous but lacking in substance.

Heard quite a lot. It is undoubtedly good but clearly doesn't deserve to be seen as one of the UK's best.

This might interest you.

that's an interesting perspective although it is from 2010 so things could have changed, and it seems like whoever wrote it didn't research properly into what st andrews is like. thanks for sharing anyway

From my discussions with a friend who's currently studying at KCL:
- Higher costs of living, to which most students haven't really gotten used to at start and really won't be too happy about
- It feels as if you're commuting to uni everyday, with most 2nd/3rd years (with a few exceptions) easily spending 40 mins or more a day getting to and from the campus. When coupled with how long it takes to get around in general, the routine can get tiring really quickly.
- High proportion of foreign students, who may (note: massive overgeneralisation) be daunted by living alone, in a foreign country, for the first time, and as such not feel completely at ease until their 2nd/3rd year.
- Fairly cramped uni facilities (this applies more to UCL and particularly LSE, apparently)
- Lack of a collegiate system (most of your social life will revolve around the halls you live in, whose social life varies considerably)

From some of the posts I've seen, it may also have to do with staff being more research-oriented than, say, Durham, meaning that they devote fewer contact hours and effort addressing your concerns (this issue is, however, definitely not unique to London).

These are just some random thoughts, please feel free to pick up on any of them

Repped  ty

Where do 2nd/3rd years tend to live? In houses like students at non Londno unis?

If you had more money and stayed in non Uni pricy halls like the internationals sometimes do would you not make friends? Potential mature student here..

Why are UoL staff more London oriented (noob here :colondollar:)
Original post by Moonstruck16
Because you're living in London. I mean obviously a lot of it has to do with the university, but naturally that type of rating will be heavily influenced by external factors.

is it mainly cost of living in London?
Does anyone know which is best for maths between uea, sussex and kent?

I think St Andrews is overrated because of William and Kate, but it's also underrated because people never really consider it because it isn't a Russell Group and it's probably one of the smallest and remote places to go to Uni.

Congrats on your offer from Cam but I'd be a little modest...

*Sighs*
1) Never implied I had an offer
2) Was obviously sarcasm, seeing how stuck up it sounded. How could I have even made it more sarcastic?
What's everyone's opinions on UCL, Bristol and Durham? Struggling to pick between the three!!!

I recall you saying elsewhere in the forum that you have an offer. Apologies for not picking up the sarcasm although there are some really arrogant people around so you can't tell sometimes...

Oh yeah I agree, however I can understand their arrogance, they've achieved something pretty good.

Half my friends are yet to know I have an offer, despite me being the only one from our school with an offer so you'd think it would spread quick xD I only told like my best couple friends. To me it's not about being modest, it's just 100x more satisfying when someone comes out of their way randomly to congratulate you, than it is to tell loads of people yourself xD

Plus I've always thought the education system just fortunately plays to my strengths, it's more hard work + luck than it is "I'm better than you" if you know what I mean

Imperial. I was having second thoughts for not applying there, because of its reputation, £5000 bursary and for the course I was interested in, 'Environmental Biology and Ecology', it had lower requirements than Natural Sciences which I had applied for elsewhere. However upon looking at the employment figures for that course, only ~75% were employed/further study after 6 months which is worrying since it was a decent sample size, too (~100), this figure is usually over 85-90%. I can only guess that it's because it may be a new course or they specialise quite a lot in the maths/physics/engineering side of things which they are known for, but not so much biology.

This UCL bashing is quite worrying too, I have an offer from them for natural sciences and from Durham too, my top two choices. I wonder what is wrong exactly (except for the extortionate rent which I have heard about) or are they students from a 'rival' university by any chance?

I'd say Nottingham and Manchester for being underrated. I think the only reason for their lower ranking is because they have so many students and such a wide range of courses, but they deserve more recognition.

Warwick is an interesting one... I didn't apply there but the people I know who did apply got offers from them within a few weeks, but seem to have written them off completely, for various reasons including 'it's too modern', 'ugly', 'prison-like, terrible accommodation'. Perhaps its underrated in some regard? It claims to have always been in the top 10 since records began but I don't know many who have it as a first choice.

If you hear great things from UCL about why you should study there, don't expect those things to actually be great. Or exist at all.
