I guess it can't be helped sometimes, being more outgoing definitely works well though.
random periods of silence. not continuing a conversation. body language that doesn't synchronize with what you're saying.

If you're aware it's the wrong thing to do you're probably not socially awkward.

These are the typical traits of someone who is socially awkward:
You have few or no friends.
You find yourself left out in social groups.
You prefer to not talk to people.
When you have to talk to someone, you analyse what you are going to say and do.
You have been told that you're bad at socialising/interpreting body language.
I'm just going to point out that being introverted is not the same as being socially awkward. Social awkwardness is characterised by simply not knowing what you are doing wrong.
