What does a trader at an asset management firm do?

Is the work similar to market making for the asset management firm's clients or do the traders trade securities for the bank (i.e. Execution trading like at a hedge fund)?

Also, is the compensation at these firms for traders similar to back office compensation or somewhere between front office equity research analysts and the back office?

Trade, mostly to execute in equity heavy strategies but a more risk management/more pnl driven role within a fixed income strategy.

Comp will vary based on the type of fund (HF v mutual/long only) and size of the fund.
