Actually, most cross country trains are much cheaper if you buy in advance; sometimes up to a quarter of the price

Can even be less than that. I've got from London to Manchester (although I disembark at Crewe) and back for around £5 with Virgin. Paying at the station on the day would cost me around £30 even with a student railcard.
