Computer Science.
Computer science would do, most universities allow you to specialise in your final year or two. Software engineering could probably do too, however these days software engineering is usually a part of a computer science degree anyway.

Hi,
I am in sixth form and I was thinking about university, and I wanted to know what university course would you need to become an operating systems programmer? Is Software Engeneering anywhere near, because I think that is to do with programming software like ms word etc. but not operating systems.
Any ideas?
Thank you

An OS is as much software as an application like MS Word. Software engineering is not just about making stuff like Word.

That said, computer science is probably a better bet. Or maybe something like a computer science and electronics engineering course.
Again, Computer Science is the way to go.
Software Engineering. Visual Basic, C (hash) C++. That would be ideal.
