If I could I would go, but it is too expensive for me to flight from Lithuania..
So if I choose an accommodation on campus it would cost approximately from £85 to 105 a week ?

yeah thats right...they are about £94 a week

hm... it is difficult to decide. but according to the cost it seems to me that it is much better to live out of campus. If I lived out of campus, i would have to go by bus to university every morning, right ? Additional expenses..

Student village points:

You are far from the uni and will be dependent on the bus route.

You will probably have to wake up like 7.30 - 8 for a 9 o'clock lecture

that is impossible if you come back from oceana or other clubs on kingsway between 3-4 am

The accommodation in the village is ****

I've got a copy of swansea union's student paper infront of me which reads ' forgotten land' which is basically a big complaint about the living conditions in the student village

The only benefit is the size of the community and the social aspect.

Singelton Campus points:

Expensive, especially if you want ensuite

Much closer to town in comparison to student village

You can hang out more at the main bar, J.C's

You only need to wake up 5 minutes before a lecture to get there.

You can spend a longer amount of time at the library. This is unimportant as first year students aren't necessarily the hardest workers, but during the exam period where the library is open 24 hours, you can stay up till 5am or whatnot and go back to your accommodation within minutes

this one is more of a guess, but security is much more active in singelton, so if you have a very loud party beyond the allowed time, they'll probably close it down in singelton

This is where I fall into

if, through clearing, you fail in getting student accomodation in time

you will be have to do a house hunt

You are likely to get screwed because of your lack of knowledge of the area and lack of info and experience with students and letting agencies.

Hint: avoid dodgy letting agencies such as 1stop

Hint: Chose Brynmill.. but you will be out competed by future second and third years who would have made their reservations months before you

If you get it right, you will have it cheaper than in student accomodation and will have a bigger room.

You will have access to tesco. This is better than spar

You will be closer to town than those in singelton and will find it easier to walk it there.

you will be closer to the uni than student village people, but not as close as those in singelton campus.

I like in brynmill and wake up 20 minutes before my lecture

You will have less friends to chose from in private accomodation if you're a first year

You'll have automatic friends amongst those in your house.. more than those in student village and singelton, but you might miss out on the fun of being in student accomodation. It p****s me off now and then.

You won't have to wake up from random fire alarms

You will have a lounge area as well as a kitchen area. You can put an xbox in that lounge. (we have 3 xbox's in our house, 2 wiis, 5 tvs, pool table.... way way more entertainment than people in accomodation)

Notes about accomodation in general:

It's easy to get used to shared showers and toilets. I desperately wanted ensuite, but shared showers aren't bad as long as no one takes a dump in the tub and wipes it in protest

as a first year student I will probably choose to live in a university campus, although it is more expensive than in a student village. I do not want en-suite accommodation, as it's more expensive.

Hm.. I am lost. You know, as I am a foreigner student the costs are very important for me.

And one more question. What about the city Swansea ? Is there much to do ? How about the situation of part-time jobs ?

P.S. Now I am looking at the booklet of costs of accommodation. I see that I would pay approximately from 69 to 85 pounds a week on campus. (Standard)
Of course, the cheapest option is to live in University-managed property. (from 55 to 65 pounds a week). It is written that it is close to the campus .

I must note that even though student accomodation is poor, the social aspect has made many students love their time at the student village.

It depends on who you are.

Swansea is not that big of a city. i just went into it to go pizza hut

Within swansea is a city center, mumbles ...

within swansea city center is a small shopping center called the quadrant. within it are a few fashion shops, hmv, 1 big department store ( i think it's a debenhams) and its connected to the indoor market, which include various stalls within one big hall. It does everything from keys to fish (part of the area stinks like fish)

Whether swansea is right for you depends on your tastes

if you're a party boy or girl, you'll have plenty of clubs and pubs to chose from.. they're concentrated in a few areas for convinience ( kingsway and windstreet. You'll find out when you get here)

There are like 2 casinos. Aspers is fun as long as you don't go nuts

There are 2 cinemas. My favourite is Vue near tesco in the marina

there is a big lesiure center called the LC2 which under went a 32 million pound refurbishment.

Impressive, but I haven't even used it.

If you live in uni, you'll be close to the university's sports center where you can do a sport and go gym

quick Q for any current students

how fast does the accomodation go once the date for applying is open? ill apply as soon as it is open anyways to help guarantee where i want to stay but i know when my friend applied for her accomodation at loughborough it went in a matter of hours, i was wondering if it was the same at swansea?

In my opinion i don't think there is that great of a deal of international students, but there aren't few either

i recommend you to use something like the times university guide to higher education to get a subject specific ranking

for example, some of our departments are more distinguished than others

aerospace engineering, for example, is really good

I was just curious as to when you could apply for accommodation at Swansea? I have already firmed the university and I would really like to get the acom as soon as possible, but I have no idea how to go about it or even if your allowed to apply for it this early?

It's naff unless they've done it up since i left three years ago. The rooms are ensuite but it's more like a wet room than a proper bathroom, you can't leave loo paper or towels in it when you have a shower because they'll get wet. It used to be part catered in my day too, not sure if there are other options available for it now.

Hi, I'm hopefully coming to Swansea Uni in September 2010. Just looking for some advice on the best place to stay. I fancy the sound of the Student Village. Can anyone give me some feedback on what the accomodation is like because i didn't get the chance see inside the rooms on my visit.
