Ask the landlord to fit a lock on your door or to change the forntdoor lock to one that locks automatically when closed (like i assumed most fornt doors did)

If you don't ask you don't get.
Also, knock some sense into your housemate, it's not just forgetfulness, it's common decency. They obviously don't care enough about their possessions, or yours.
