Hi all, I'd firstly like to thank everyone for their contributions as they provide great insight. At the risk of sounding stupid I wanted to know if being a
For some reason it has cut off 90% of what I typed up 😡

I wanted to know if being a smoker impacts your chances of getting into to RAF.

I'm in the process of quitting I.e. A couple a day

But was hoping for insight if for example the fitness is up to scratch is it a problem?

Can you even smoke in the RAF, training, Halton etc

Well done for quitting.

Your smoking though will have had an impact on your fitness but if you go out running regularly then it shouldn't be too noticeable. The reason why it has an impact is because it causes irreparable damage to the alveoli in the lungs which defuse oxygen into the blood stream. The oxygenated blood is then delivered to your muscles. However, if you do go running often then you might be more fit than other recruits. As fitness is one of the problems the armed forces face during recruitment.

Also I assume you might be able to smoke in the RAF but during training you may not get the time to.

For a fitness plan have a look at the 12 week plan made by the RAF.

If you miss the date for the exam, is there a pssoiblity to rearrange the date so you can sit the exam?
Nice to know that process is going smoothly for you.. do point out when you go for PRTC.

if all goes well my TMU will end soon. been 4 months for me so far. p.s. I wouldnt add dates to the courses.
My daughter was made TMU in September which then turned to PMU in November and this wasnt overturned until February! Her fitness test followed in February which unfortunately she failed. She eventually passed in April and then attended her specialist training in June. So, next week she has her 3 days at Halton and basic starting on the 30th August. The process overall is now going through very quickly and we are very thankful to the local AFCO office who have worked very hard to support her and make this next transition very smooth. Good luck with your journey.
Full well know as soon as i get past this part it will be all flying. Do hope all the best whos going through it all.

Got to the point should just wait and not call as i still want to show im not gonna give up. However when i Do call medical team to see any news but get told they have requested to be done but they havent heard anything back.

Hi just wondering I have just received note that I failed my selection interview and they have given no reason why, is this normal? And also does this mean that I can reapply or not? Thanks
you can request to ask why but they don't have to.

Anyone know if they still make you cut your hair really short during basic?

In line with current trends, if you can get it into a top knot then you can keep it.

Is this for after basic or during too?

I was pulling your leg there. You will be required to keep your hair in line with regulations according to your gender. For males this equates to a short back and sides with sideburns halfway down the ear. For females, a bun if long enough and only natural colours.

I wouldn't worry too much about the required haircut though, it will grow back when you get out.

😂😂 I grabbed my hair and thought "well..its kinda a top knot I guess" thanks for the reply!
I'm currently looking to join the RAF as an aircraft technician (mechanical) and I'm in year 11. I want to join at the age of 18 once I have my A levels but I don't know when to apply. From what I've read so far I'm led to believe students apply in the September of year 13 with a view to begin the application process during or after exam season - I know this is a stressful time of year but I'm just trying to get my head around the time scale of putting in the application and actually beginning all the tests/the process. Any kind of info would be great, I really appreciate the help - thanks
My son is also in Year 11 and going to do A levels from Sept 2019. I too would like to know the time frame for applying if anyone can assist. Thanks

Could be 3 months, could be a year. Really hard to say. Most people see a small delay of one kind or another.

And then even if they did pass everything first time, their slot basic is scheduled to lead straight onto their phase 2 training course, and they don't happen as regularly as basic courses.

Get exams out of the way, then start.
I'm currently going through the application process for pilot but the start will be similar. It took 6 weeks for my application to be reviewed, I was then given a date for my p2 presentation which was about another month. So up to the P2 presentation it could take you 10 weeks from applying. However, the aptitude testing comes around quickly as the CBAT seems to be done twice a month, not too sure about the AST. I've been told by the recruitment team that it could take 3-9 months for the whole process.

When to apply? I can only echo what drewski has said, do the exams first then start your application.

Hi

As has been stated, the entire application process can take anywhere from 3-9 months, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter, it will depend on the role applied for and when you apply.

Your son will be kept informed at each stage of the application process with regards to dates etc, so he will know what's happening and when.

Kind regards
Adam

Thanks. We spoke to a very eloquent RAF airman at a careers fair recently and he answered lots of questions for us. He also looked very smart! He loves his job!
