lactose intolerance? what can i eat?

Okay, so I am recently starting to think I may be lactose intolerant. When i have weetabix in the morning i immediatley have diarrhea, and i eat loads of cheese and bread and dairy products, i'm usually bloated and have stomach cramps. also, even though i eat loads my stomach always rumbles and makes strange noises. i know it could be IBS, but it seems to occur when i eat foods containing lactose. i also get really bad after i've eaten a chinese take away.. anyone know why this is?
also.. if i do have it... what on earth can you eat? all my diet consists of ( okay not all ) is bread and cheese, im a really fussy eater, i cant even touch seafood without feeling sick and the only meat i eat is chicken.
any advice would be much appreciated!
I can tell you what you can't eat. Delicious lemon meringue pie with ice cream and a milkshake.

Other than that, Google is your friend.

With symptoms like that you need to see your doctor as it could be anything making you feel unwell.

I have coeliac disease and I had no idea I had it until I was diagnosed, so I highly recommend you see a doctor so they can assess your diet properly and refer you to a specialist if necessary.

You can also get lactose free foods, perhaps try them for a few weeks and completely eliminate anything else with lactose in during this time, to see how you get on.

Also, keep a food and symptom diary as this will come in handy for when you see your doctor.
have a glass of milk
calm down and have some tea and cake, that should take your mind of it.
for the chinese takeaway google MSG, its separate to lactose intolerance
I'm lactose intolerant and I find it pretty easy. I also hate seafood. Main meals are not much of a problem for me, but desserts are pretty difficult if you don't make them yourself i'm not gunna lie.
If you want to work out if you're lactose intolerant, cut out lactose completely for a week and see if it makes a difference

So, some tips:
Have mash but don't use milk, use marge. This goes for making cakes and any other baking.
I have orange juice on cereal, but I don't think thats that common
dark chocolate is ok, just don't have milk or white choc.
read your labels! avoid whey powder and skimmed milk powder
you're going to have to avoid ice creams, but you can have lollys and other ices and sorbet
You're going to pretty much have to cut out cheese completely, sorry. That and yoghurt and cream, sorry. theres just not eqilvelents. I just eat hot desserts without cream and deal with the hotness.

humm.. can't think of anything else. ask any questions. why is this anon btw?

You need to see a GP. Even if it is the milk, it may not be lactose, but protein. My mum and one sister is lactose intolerant, but I am milk protein intolerant - which means they can eat HARD cheese for example, but not butter, and I can use butter, but not cheese...

As others have said, it may even be a number of other things, and you need to ensure you have a healthy diet, and don't just cut out foods
Being Lactose Intolerant is much easier to handle than if you were turning vegetarian. I am Lactose Intolerant. I drink Lactofree milk and eat lactofree cheese. I can handle a bit of regular cheese so I don't mind pizzas or food from shops. As long as it isn't much of it like in a coffee or a milkshake. In which case I ask for soya milk as they don't sell the lactofree milk. I'm fine with lactose in small doses but I do my best to avoid it. I have Ice Cream but I don't eat too much of it in one go.

Honestly I can't taste the difference now. I'd suggest going to your GP.

It could also be possible that you're gluten intolerant.

Speak to your doctor about it as there's various tests they can do to figure out if it is lactose or gluten you're allergic to.

Stop dairy for a week - no milk, no milk products (whey powder), no products with lactose in (check the ingredients! - walkers salt and vinegar crisps have lactose as a flavouring!). See how you feel.

At least with me, if its a considerable amount of milk i'm eating it will be 30-45 mins before i start feeling bloated / feel i've got the runs. You may find you can eat a small amount without it affecting you - yet cereal covered in milk will.

I can eat a standard size dairy milk and be ok, can also eat mature hard cheese like cheddar (lactose has been changed by the bacteria in the cheese making process).

You still need to see your GP though.
I'm pretty sure I'm secondary lactose intolerant, but getting over it now (stopped eating any dairy, and got really bad symptoms when I reintroduced it).

Just cut it out for a while to see whether its lactose which is giving you grief. It could be coeliac (after you mentioned the bread) or some other intolerance. It really does depend on how much milk and cheese you eat, because I had a lot of cheese, and a lot of dairy but then cut it all out for a diet, so it wasn't a big change for me, I just had to reintroduce things slowly.

I drink soy milk in my coffee, and have it on cereal and I can't tell. Haven't ventured as far as lactose-free cheese, but it's an option! I do have feta cheese though, and that seems fine. It's a lot harder to cut out dairy than you think though (casein in cows milk is apparently addictive!). So you're really just going to have to cut it out and reintroduce it to try and find out where the problems are.

And to be honest, some of those symptoms would warrant a trip to the doctor if I were you!
You can eat everything except lactose products...

There's soya alternatives to both of those! Look out for Alpro and Provamel versions - I haven't tried the cream yet but I can't even tell the difference between the soya yoghurts and the dairy version. In big supermarkets they will have Alpro yoghurts and go to the 'free from' section for the cream. Swedish Glace is a delicious alternative to ice cream too!

I may be lactose intolerant.

You mean you scream racist abuse when you drink milk?
I have lactose intolerance.
Definitely go to your doctor, though, as dairy can affect us in different ways; for me, i get bloated and migraines, and be sick :frown: also when i binge, i put my immune system at risk and i get colds easier than most people (it was something along those lines anyway!)
there are a lot of products that you can buy which can be substituted:
1) the lacto-free range (they do milk and spreadable cheese)
2) soya yogurt and cream and ice-cream, which actually tastes OK! You can find these things in a large supermarket/ health store like holland and barret
3) avoid packet meals with cheese and white sauce, things with cheese/milk powder, most puddings and chocolate (unfortunately) oh, never buy soya chocolate. tastes like poo.
4) be careful when going out for dinner-steer clear of italian food as much as possible
5) if you do have a dairy binge, and feel ill, just get into your PJ's and take time in getting better, and eat things like crackers and bread.
After a while you do get used to the taste, and i now prefer soya milk to normal milk! :ahee:
Take care, hon
There are lactofree products so you can still enjoy milk, cheese, custard, yoghurts etc... there areany alternatives out there!
You may want to look at thread dates before posting.
Google vegan recipes for your favourite foods these will be dairy free or check on Pinterest. Pasta with most sauces , falafel , beans with potato , omelette ... But probably check with a dietician if you are lactose intolerant as it's commonly misdiagnosed
