Thanks LewDacris.

Graduate entry medicine is really competitive...i'v already been rejected for this year.

Now, i'm looking for a patient related career that doesn't involve having Medicine as a background. This is going to sound so stupid, but i do not have another 4 years or the money to go for Medicine. I'm really struggling, i know. But i hope you see my situation.

I'm trying to look at all the options.

Really appreciate your message though.

Which uni did you do biomed at?

i didn't achieve very good a-level grades. i thought that after a biomed degree, it would be easier to get into medicine. :frown:

did you try Keele? They dont look at a-level grades so much as other uni's.. and post grad med is alot more competative than undergrad med :[

Hi everyone,

I just joined this website in order to get some help from all you good people.

I have graduated with a Biomedical Science degree at 2.1. However, i really want to do Medicine but i can't afford it.

I am really stuck as what to do from now on. I believe that whatever i choose to do now, i have to stick with it for the rest of my life.

Keeping in mind that i wanted to become a doctor, could you please inform me of any careers that i can do which are very much similar to Medicine - earning around £40,000 at start.

Or can i do a masters, where i maybe able to carry out similar duties to a doctor.

The bottom line is that i want to do hospital based work, working with patients etc. But NOT A NURSE.

PLEASSSEEEE HELP ME?!!?

I asked you on this on another thread- did you not make arrangements to have at least 3k for your first year of a GEM course?

If medicine is really what you want then work and save the money and reapply. I've sent off 4 UCAS applications and finally got it. This forum is full of people who have applied 2 or 3 times to get a place.

And no, of course you don't have to stick to it for the rest of your life- people change paths in their 30s and 40s all the time. I know of a few medical and dental students who started when they were in their 30s.

If i apply to the GEM course, does that mean you have to do UKCAT or GAMSAT? I'm just really confused at the mo.

You said you got in, what Uni you at?

Thanks for your advice though - deffo appreciate it.

Hi there, if you don't mind me asking - why were you rejected for medicine in 2010 and what did you do differently when re-applying in 2011?

I did biomed at Kings got high 2.1. Got ABC at ALEVEL. Applied for 2010 entry (which was when i graduated so in my third year) got 4 rejections. Went to work. Suprisingly biomed is a very sought after degree. I had interview for investment banks, private equity, recruitment consultancy, business analysts. But decided it would be more beneficial to gain some more work experience. So i got a paid Job working in the NHS at UCL hospital as a clinical coordinator/PA/Secretary. I reapplied this year and I start medicine in September.

Moral: Dont give up. Dont let any obstacle get in your way. Brush yourself off and try again.

Also. Try 5yr courses. I know in 2012 it'll be that more expensive but if it what you want to do, then take the financial risk. But you should be good enough to apply for 4yr.

And what you should also deem from my post is that Biomed can take you into many careers, as long as you are willing to explore the possibilites and possess the confidence to let it open doors for you.

Good Luck

Just putting this out there - I'm actually on a Biomed Sandwich Course and have the option evidently of taking a placement year working in a lab in a hospital in london. However I am having thoughts of just finishing my degree ASAP so I can apply to either Med or Dentistry. But I'm concerned I may not get in after my third year so just wondering other's experienced advice whether i should take placement year as something to fall back on.

Sorry for late reply. MY UKCAT was low in low 598 or something (terrible i know!)meant i only got one interview, on that interview day i had food poisoning and it was too late to cancel. I sat in that interview and babbled like a fool because i so nervous, tired, stressed and trying to completely soil the room including examiners....BAD times!

When reapplying i worked alot harder for my UKCAT instead of two days before i did 2-3months prep. Bought an online question bank and practiced every day for a few hours. Boosted my UKCAT to 680. Did proper interview preparation and remained calm.

i reallly wanted to do medicine, but didnt get the grades - this is my last yr of biomed and don't know where to go from here. I never really wanted to do biomed, but after it i thought i would do medicine, but have been rejected from all my unis :frown:

I have looked at biomed science jobs and they are hard work and very little pay. also opportunities are very difficult to find without a masters or PHD.

I am really confused as to what to do. is there anyway i can still get into medicine? what are my best options now?

any help is greatly appreciated - thanks!

Hey

I know this is an old post! :colondollar: But OP what route did u take then, if you dont mind me asking?

I'm kind of in the same situation, i'm in second year for biomed but not sure what to do after the degree  Working in labs wasnt something that I wanted to do....I wanted something with more patient contact! :frown:

Hello,
I have applied to Biomedical Science as well, but not sure what sort of careers I could do with this degree except researches and work in NHS? Is it hard to find a job with this degree?? Would u be able to work in areas such as cosmetic research and development?? Or it's more biochemistry??
Also would I be able to apply for other master degrees that is not related to science after I graduated?? For examples, MSc accounting or MSc Business?? (Cuz I saw from some of the universities website, they requires a first or 2:1 in accounting or related degree such as mathematics or business to do MSc accounting).

Thank you

If you want to stay in science, it probably will be in research/NHS work. Industry jobs will usually involve research as well.

Cosmetics R&D, or QA is also an option - check out the L'Oreal webpage for some of the job listings they have to give you an idea. I'm not sure if Boots is currently hiring for R&D, but it will most likely be located in Nottingham. Another possible option would be working for a major company involved with foodstuffs.

Finding a job won't be hard with the degree as long as you are open to moving around. I recently saw a science posting for...I think it was Buxton. Non-lab based jobs may involve sales/medical affairs/regulatory affairs/medical devices. I think patent examiner is also an option, but not too clear on that. Earlier this year, MHRA was looking for people to work on medical device regulations.

As for non science Master's, I doubt that they would be willing to accept a science graduate for accounting/business unless there is relevant work experience.

Im going to be blunt as possible and tell you know, there isn't much out their for a biomedical graduate. If your looking for a 'good' starting salary with a steady career progression, the opportunities are very slim. Unless, you get into the NHS which would be a good way to make a start to a fairly successful career. However, its very competitive.

In terms of getting into medicine, I would recommend you try Aberdeen university, they have a specially designed medicine course for graduates like yourself.

I hope this helps and best of luck!

By applying since, it doesn't matter what degree you have.

Hey!

@amir shah, i know this is an old post but what happened *did you get to do medicine after biomed? Which route did you take? What was the outcome? My son is about to start biomed and he really wanted to do medicine but grades didn't make it. I was googling where bio medicing leads and came acroos this post. I hope you got what you wanted in the end, you seemed so keen to do medicine and I am sure you would have made a great doctor with such desire for this profession.
