Brick
PU-239 aka. The Half Life of Timofey Berezin

I love the general stigma in film, music and literature these days that says Depressing = Good.

On another note, here are some films I suggest.

Inside Man
The Prestige
Don't be a Menace (to South Central whilst drinking your juice in the hood)
Versus
Uncle Buck

Dogma.

Okay, I admit, I've been thinking about suggesting it for our next film night, I want to watch it again. It's pretty funny though, without being inane (well...there is the...no I wont mention it)

Requiem for a Dream if you want something a bit different

Definitely.
Especially the way in which parts of it are edited to fit the music/sound effects
City of God.

May have been mentioned, should have but I'm not trawling through a hundred one sentence posts, I just wanna add to it

Devil's Advocate (GREAT film)
Wall Street (You can watch it just in time for its upcoming prequel this year )
Constantine (another great reeves film)

Lucky Number Slevin
Brazil

By ruling out foreign films and most before the 1990's your missing out on quite alot of great films, City of God has been mentioned quite alot and I forgot it originally but its amazing, and if your going on reviews then its number 17 on imdb.
Pi
The Hurtlocker i was surprised about (thought it was going to a bit more gung ho)
The Counterfitters (if you dont mind German subs)
