What is a chavvy car?

I saw this:
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1718238

And the OP said that he has a corsa 1.2 sxi 16v, and he was told that it was chavvy?

I was under the impression that a chav car was a modified one? When I googled, the model I saw this:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/photo060oud.jpg/

And it seems to be unmodded

I then looked here:
http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=496771&page=2

Someone had a Peugeot 205, and when I saw that I just assumed it's a cheap car where insurance is a massive issue (ie: in my case when a £200 car would cost £5000+ to insure with a compulsory £250 excess)

Someone else said that they have a 2003 Ford Focus, and this is what it looks like?
http://www.dragtimes.com/images/12537-2003-Ford-Focus.jpg

and apparently all these cars I've shown are all chavvy? I'm now confused. What constitutes a chavvy car. I was under the impression that a modified car was chavvy, the way you drove it etc...

So I'm right in thinking that modified car= chavvy car?

I've seen a couple episodes of Crimewatch with the getaway car being some of those cars you've listed OP.

These cars seem "normal" to me ie: stock? Unless of course they become chavvy once "badly" modified?

They're cheap and aftermarket mods for them are everywhere. They aren't chavvy cars in themselves, but they're targets for chavs to modify, and that's why insurance on them is so high.

Ah I see. So I should avoid modified and cheap cars? No wonder then why a 1995 Peugeot 107 would have cost over 5K in insurance then. I don't plan to get a car at the minute any way, as I'd much rather do my driving test, get it out of the way and wait some years for the question "How long have you had your license?" where I can reply 4/5 despite me not driving since I got my license

EDIT: It would actually be cheaper to not get insurance, and to risk having to pay a 5K fine than to pay for insurance :frown::mad::angry::angry::mad::frown:

Chav cars..... long ago when I was still a student in US we called such cars as carbage or riceboymobile. Largely in part because the only ones who would do stupid things to their cars were the Asians (usually of Chinese or Japanese origin) and their favourite thing to do was to buy a base Eagle Talon then make it look like the most expensive Mitsubishi Eclipse or the ultimate favourite, converting a Honda Civic DX to be a SiR or Type R LOL... or when they finally start working they buy a BMW 318i and make it look as if it is a M3

Slowly the trend started spreading to others as well, the nuisance then became those low-riders

Then I came to Britain, funny thing those days chavs favourite mobiles were the Citroen Saxos, they largely became popular because in their early years you could buy one with free insurance even if you were under 21. For that reason alone they remained popular with many young drivers and all kinds of funny extras came on the after market............and soon it became the favourite cars of chavs......well until the insurance industry found a way to kill it.

These days chav cars can be almost anything from old Escorts and Astras together with older Corsas and fiestas. I won't say there was a single car that is now favoured by chavs, but it does seem like a lot of them go for older Vauxhalls.

I have a corsa 1.2 sxi, its not modified or anything but I do think they a slightly chavvy! Because I associate them with 17 year old boys that pretty much lie down driving - you know the type.

Yeah, but not worth losing your license over. Once you get the first years NCB it's plain sailing.

No, of course not. Like I said I'm not getting a car yet any way. The insurance cost about £5700 I believe on that £200 car. I could buy 28.5 cars for that price! (or a better car)

That's one of the reasons why I'm waiting. Another reason is that I currently get by everywhere by public transport or more commonly by foot

Nah, I didn't really have that urge to start driving at 17(still here nearly 2 years later) whereas others got really excited. I see cars as something that gets me from A to B, is aesthetically pleasing, good on fuel, and doesn't look too embarrassing.

At the moment, Ill continue to use trains

I have an idea the noise : power ratio is important ...

Loud exhaust + beastly TVR Griffith 4.2l V8 = not in any way chavvy

Loud exhaust + Ford Focus ST = a bit suspect

Loud exhaust + Vauxhall Corsa 1.0i = very chavvy indeed!

This is what the chav scene has moved onto, hellaflush and it can make even quite a handsome car look completely stupid, let alone ruin everything that is good about a car.

Anything that cost below £15,000 to buy new.
