Ooooooo those pics of Lafrowda looks lushhh!!! I might consider Lafrowda Enhanced for my 1st choice~ uber close to the Streatham campus + cheaper rent compared to others~ but gosh cant think of a good 2nd/3rd choice...! :frown:

Does anyone know the likelihood of getting your 1st choice?

Meaning no offence whatsoever to Lafrowda, but I doubt the pictures that look lush are of the Enhanced bits. Enhanced are the bedrooms that look like this, and the kitchens that look like this. Don't get me wrong, it has a great atmosphere and people really like living there, but bear in mind the cheaper rooms are the plainer ones.

Getting your first choice - I don't think there's a real answer to that. It depends what your first choice is, what everyone else's first choice is, and how much of that particular accommodation there is.

Hullo there-

What's the best place in Exeter for self-catering? I'm an awkward vegan so that's my top priority; I can't eat the catered stuff. On visits to other unis some of the kitchens were awful, just so tiny and cramped you could just about make a bowl of cereal. Is any particular accommodation best for self-caterers?

There's sometimes more fridges towards the door - see how that girl in the picture is marching purposefully away with a pint of milk?

Hmm, I actually think that looks quite nice compared to Cook Mews for the same price. I think I might choose Lafrowda.

Cook has seperate living rooms, though, which Laffy doesn't...

Thanks to my extreme nosiness, I have a pretty good general knowledge when it comes to the various different residences; and I always do like to answer questions - but it's hard to keep up when they pop up all over the place, so let's collect them here...

Who wants to know what?

Hi, I'm probably going to apply for en-suite catered, and am considering options. When you pick your three choices, can you be very exact about what three you want? I.e. if I pick something in Birks Grange Village, can I specify en-suite, or could I end up with a twin/standard?
Also, could you tell me a bit about Birks Grange Village? I quite like the look of it, is it nice?
Thank you:smile:

Edit: Just to add, I'm hoping to study Modern Languages- got a conditional offer, so Birks Grange and Holland appealed to me as they're nearest to my department!

Birks Grange Village as a whole has the catered bit, which used to be called just 'Birks Grange' but got adopted as part of the 'Village' when all the self-catered bit was built in the last couple of years. That means there's quite a lot of people living down there now, so you should certainly never lack for people to hang out with...

You get to be very specific, so putting 'Birks Grange Village catered en-suite' means that and doesn't mean anything else, but they can't promise to be able to put you into one of your three choices (because if they did, they'd obviously be stuffed if everyone picked the same three things). So, it's theoretically possible that you could end up in a twin and/or standard room, if they didn't have the things you'd applied for left and thought that was the closest match to what you were after. There is a notes section on the application, though, so if, for example, the most important thing to you is having an en-suite, you can always put a note on to say that if they can't allocate you to catered en-suite you'd rather have a self-catered en-suite than a non-ensuite catered room - or whatever it is that particularly sums up your thoughts.

Thank you so much:smile: That's really helpful! I want to be completely ready for when the online application opens in April, even though it's not 'first come first serve' haha:smile:, I just like to get things like that done as soon as possible:biggrin: so it's really helpful to have an idea of how it works.
Not sure yet whether it's more important to me to be catered or have an en-suite, I actually really like cooking but I fancied catered for the first year because there's so much going on and I also thought it would be a good way to meet people .
On the website it says that some of them are oversubscribed, but it doesn't say that about Birks Grange, although I'm guessing the en-suites might be?
At Birks Grange, do the self-catered and catered people all live in the same building or is it separated?
Thank you so much for all your help!

Different buildings - one big building made up of several blocks, which is the catered accommodation, and then a load of blocks of self-catered (flats, studios, and houses). The actual meals for catered students are in Central Block, which isn't so much central as at one end of everything (pretty sure self-catered people can go and buy a meal too, if they want), and there's a little shop there, too.

Okay so I'm considering putting Exeter as my firm.
I really like cooking - cook all my own meals etc - so i've always been certain I wanted to go self catered. But I also want to be friends with the people living around me and is this more difficult in self-catering - like is there less of a sense of community.
Also which of the following are best: St German's, Rowe House, Lafrowda, James Owen Court and Birks Grange Village
thanks! xxx

Haha, yeah there're a couple of large fridges round the corner in Lafrowda Enhanced kitchens.

My advice would be that unless you hate socialising, noise and any kind of uncleanliness, regardless of how much money you have, pick one of the cheaper options, i.e. Lafrowda Enchanced. You'll have the best social life and make the most friends. Generally, the less people are paying for their accommodation, the less likely they are to be stuck-up conceited arse holes. Speaking from experience.

Don't think for a second that the more you pay for your accommodation, the better it'll be to live there.

Also: Seriously consider location. Those picking Moberly/Birks/Llewellyn have to climb up a massive hill to get to lectures whilst those in Lafrowda/Lopes/St Germans/Rowe/Penny C have a leisurely 5-10 min stroll.

Here's a map

If anyone wants to ask me any questions about first year accommodation, feel free to send me a message. I know a fair bit about what it's like to live in each accommodation, although I may be a bit biased because of how great my first year was where I lived.

I wouldn't say there is much less of a sense of community being in self-catered in comparison to catered, as long as you make the effort to get to know people outside your flat.
In terms of the accommodation, I would say it depends on what subject you're doing. For maths/anything in the Business School and most humanities you're going to want to be on the side of campus nearest to town as that's where the majority of your lectures will be so Rowe House, St. German's, Lafrowda and JOC (James Owen is about a 20min walk off campus, but it's a nice lot of halls and it's right by the nightclub Arena and Dominos!). Most of Lafrowda is practically brand new, so expect shiny new buildings, pod ensuite etc. St. German's and Rowe House are a bit older, but the upside is that the rooms are slightly bigger and you get a double bed! (I know in Rowe House the kitchens have only just been refurbished to bring them in line with new Lafrowda/BGV, but I think a friend in St. G's said that it will be getting some sort of refurb over the summer too).
Birks is right over the other end of campus down "Cardiac Hill", climbed it once, never again... Saying that the accommodation down there is of a very high standard, again being very new. I've been in a Birks room once and although it's smaller than mine in Rowe House it's very nicely laid out, plenty of shelving and a nice pod wet room in the corner. I guess if you were doing Physics/other sciences and the more arty subjects it's more feasible to live that side of campus as again that's where the departments are based.
Hey guys i'm currently holding an offer for the LLB European Law Maitrise also, however I'm looking for a single ensuite room, which is siutated near the law school. I went to the offer day a few days ago and visited the new lafrowda block, would this be the best option in terms of proximity to the law school? and also are any other law offer holders intending on applying for these halls?

The Law school's based in Amory isn't it? Even though I highly doubt all of your lectures will be there by the look of the timetabling website a lot of them are, so anything round Lafrowda, Rowe House, St. German's would be good if you're looking at self catered, and Exeter Halls (Penny C, Lopez, Randy P, Hope etc.) if you're going for catered.

Great! Which is the best self catered residence in the price range of about 4000 a year or less?
