Believe it or not, 'holocaust' - particularly without the definite article - is just a normal word. It doesn't refer exclusively to the Holocaust of the Jews in Nazi Germany.

Are you aware of the concept of connotations?

How does it even make sense, how can a defender have an act of mass genocide.....The Tsunami reference made more sense since a Tsunami is a force of power and speed. This guy should be sacked without a doubt.

Journalists have used the word 'blitz' before, but are not refering to the bombardment of London (mostly) which killed hundreds of people, but rather a bombardment of goals and shots etc. Its crazy how people get all touchy about the holocaust but can use the term blitz whenever they like. The blitz may have lead to less deaths but it was still an atroscity and should be treated with the same amount of respect as the holocaust. Cascarino obviously didn't write this to mock victims of the holocaust and was using an analogy which he thinks viewers could relate to. And if you look at the true meaning of the word it is a good analogy.

Blitz is a direct translation into Lightning, not a word for mass murder.....
Ahhh, here comes another storm over nothing.

Are people really still over sensitive about that stuff? If people could take it lightly and relax maybe it'd be easier for people.

Like when something goes wrong you can bitch about it, or you can laugh. Guess which one makes it better?

Funnily enough neither is Holocaust.

You seem to be missing the point that "holocaust" also has nothing to do with mass murder. It concerns animal sacrifice and is a direct translation from the Latin word that means "burnt offering".

1. Destruction or slaughter on a mass scale, esp. caused by fire or nuclear war: "a nuclear holocaust".
2. The mass murder of Jews under the German Nazi regime during the period 1941–45.

Thats not murder or anything.....

Its rarely ever used for Animal sacrifice.....

Second one is just the 'famous' use of it.

Number 1 says it itself. Desctruction or Slaughter (murder, maybe, not sure of the original use)

The historic event was named after the animal sacrifice.

It is still a far more "evil" term than Blitz.
No-one gives a **** anyway, only people who want to be seen to care.

People just like to hang somebody every now and then.

Yes the holocaust was horrific, but if you censor the word forever after you're only letting it continue to control you.

Holocaust, noun.
1. Destruction or slaughter on a mass scale

So no, in that sense it is not offensive. If he said 'This is like the Holocaust' then it could be taken offensively as it makes direct mention to an actual event.

If anyone has ever listened to Cascarino's ramblings, any excuse to get him off the screen and radio would be much appreicated. I'll happily sign up to any campaign to see him chopped tbf :colonhash:
Lolocaust.

Yes, I went there.

An english speaking person would only use the term blitz when refering to the world war bombings of britain. Therefore if used in british journalism we know what analogy they are making. And THE holocaust was mass murder, no one should deny that (i'm talking to David Irving here), but the original term referred to sacrifice and slaughter (depending on what dictionary you use). Arsenals performance can be described using these two words. I admit that I would not have mentioned the holocaust as I know some people would be offended but as i said the way he used the term was not to offend holocaust victims. This would have been 100 times worse if he used this analogy for Tottenhams defending yesterday!

No. The word "blitz" is routinely used in sporting contexts. In fact, an entire defensive tactic is named after it in American football. It is even used in cooking, for Pete's sake. Are people so unaware of their first language these days?
A daft thing to say really. Plus it didn't even fit in that well.
That's what you get for trying to be a smartass.

Ever heard of the holocaust? You numpty.

Does this mean the the film, "Cannibal Holocaust" should also be banned, purely on account of it's name? Perhaps the term nuclear holocaust should be banned.
God it's just football, who the **** cares...
