My access course is full-time (15.5 hours per week) so hopefully I'll be able to stay on JSA throughout college.

I think it depends which one you do, At my college we can either do part time over 2 years or full time in one year which i know is full days, best to ring up your college and ask

Just adding to this just in case anyone is reading and isn't aware. A full time access course usually IS less than 16 hours per week. They are also USUALLY on 2/3 days per week. I'm not sure whether your access course is different from the majority but they are all fast track and most aren't spread over the full 5 days (this would make it very difficult for most mature students to attend the course).

Wow, my whining about working and studying seems a little silly when compared to what you managed to balance. Thanks, it's reassuring to know that it's achevieable.

I'll be working nights so my 20 hours will only be Thursday and Friday. Oh and congrats on the uni place!

Thank you  At times you will be tired and think is it worth it? especially when you have several assignments due in at the same time or when you have 3 exams at the same time for unit 1 or 2 but it really is worth it  I did manage to find time for socialising or being with my teen daughter, so it's not all bad  x Good Luck and I'm sure you'll fly through it and be pleased you done it. I don't regret any of it, even with the heavy workload and juggling home/work/outside life xx Amanda xx

On the note of working alongside the course, does anyone know how many hours a week the course will take up? If it's more than 16 then I will lose JSA which definitely puts more pressure on me to get a job before the course starts D: I'm guessing it probably will be though.

I've just finished an Access Course in Carlisle and our hours were: 9.30-2.30p.m 2 days a week and 9.30-3.30p.m 1 day a week. That covered 3 subjects and an hour doing Toolbox/Study skills.I Started in the September and finished in the May x Hope this helps x Amanda xx

You did Access in Carlisle? I'm starting on Sept 10th!

Which modules did you take and what are you studying in Uni?
Just been to Ryman!

Picked up 3 notebooks, one for each subject, an academic diary, pens and post-it's. I figure if I need anything else I'll just pick the rest up as I need it. I likely will knowing me though.

Are you on the rock and roll (dole) too? I've heard some job centres can be funny about it, even if the course you are on is under 16 hours. I'll enquire next week when I go to sign-on and see what they say.
Hi Everyone!

I'm starting my Access course in a few weeks time and have my enrolment on the 1st September. I'll be working full-time and going to college on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Hoping it won't be too much, but would love to hear how others have coped/plan on coping. I don't have any kids or any huge responsibilities so I'm hoping I'll cope and not drop dead after a couple of weeks!

I'm doing English Language, Social Science and Psychology and I will be 22 by the time I go to uni (IF i get in!).

Good luck to everyone!

Hi x yes I've just finished in May. I done Psychology, English Language and Quantitive Methods (Maths). I'm going to Cumbria and I'm studying Social Work, I start on the 17th x Eventually I want to work in Child Protection x What are you wanting to do? A lot of my peers got a place at the uni of their choice but one or two didn't and it was rubbish for them x

they were dead against people working and doing the access, cause the work load builds up so much. i basically gave up work to do this, its part of my 5 year plan.
If you spek to anyone whose done it before , they will tell you how full on it gets. well i on here any one doing it in colchester institute.

Yeah, On the rock and roll  (dole :frown: ). One of my advisor said that they send it to the decision makers but as long as its usually under 16 hours then you can do it. Just don't mention that its full time hehe, on that note I am also on the (work programme?) and I asked one of my advisor and he said the same thing, if its under 16 and full time should be fine.

After this year you will end up being on student finance for 3-4 years. Far away from the dole, don't let the job centre stop you going forward in life.

Worst case scenario, tell them the benefits that in the long run you are working to get yourself off the dole in say 9 months you will be signed off instead of being on there for a whilst (which is a whilst trying to look for a job nowadays). They usually pay for security badges, forklift licenses etc why can't they let us do access? So stupid.

Hope you have read between the lines of my post :colone:

Yeah, I have one of these 5 year plans. 7 Years if I end up wanting to be a solicitor depending on my LNAT and grades on access. Nice to know that people plan long long term.
Waaaahh i'm so stressed :frown: turns out it's very unlikely I'll be getting into uni to do what i want.
Ive spent the last 5 years trying to decide what i wanna do,i did 6th form, college 3 times, the open uni and only recently realised what i'm meant/want to do is what i decided at 6 years old to become a veterniary nurse :/ Thing is ive been doing some researching and theres only 7 universities that do those courses in the UK(of which are the top top universities; Edinburgh, glasgow, bristol etc) and places are very scarce as in, 1500 applicants and only 100 places. I also need at least 10 weeks volunteering animal experience of which i have nada(currently looking) and also need high GCSE'S of which mine are only so so. Only got 1 D of which is in maths but should be redoing that in the access course but B's and C's in everything else where theyre looking for A*and A's :frown: BOOOOOOOOOO

Get distinctions in all your modules, a little bit of luck, a little bit of praying and BOOM you should be in your course. Try anyway, you have come this far only best thing to do is try and apply for it.

I went to an open day at colchester institute and they did mention that they don't recommend working whilst taking the course. I've decided on West Suffolk College instead as they do an evening course. I explained my work situation to them and they didn't express any concerns about me keeping up with the workload.

Hopefully with some planning and organization all will go to plan. I notice a lot of people have worked part time and been caring for young children whilst doing the course, and I don't feel like my job would be as stressful or time consuming as that! I stil live at home too, so I don't have the worries of housework and such.
Anywau, the colchester course did look good, so good luck

Yeah, I'd be due to start the work programme midway through my college course, which would be a right pain in the arsé with all the interviews/schemes they end up sending you too. Hopefully I won't get put on it as I'm in college!
