Imperial Vs. Durham (Maths)

Hi! would someone help me with my choice between Imperial and durham for a straight maths degree (G100) which I have offers for both.

The dilemma is (as I see it)

Imperial:
Pros: I want a career in finance/banking and imperial has the upper hand in terms of me getting into the city into a better job no?
Cons: The heavy male ratio and 'nerdy', no party reputation is slightly putting me off as I like to enjoy my time as well as achieve stuff.

BUT

Durham:
Pros: Collegiate and I like the idea of intercollege rivalry with sport etc, and the gender ratio is better and maybe party, have more fun?

Cons: Not as good with networking for a possible front office job in the banks?

Basically the same pros/cons on each but just flipped, what you think I should do?

Advice please :frown:

bumpety bump bump...oh and the imperial offer is A*A*A where as Durham is A*AA
Well as regards the reputation of Imperial for being dry on the social front then I can tell you that from what I've seen it's the opposite. It's got a 'work hard, play harder' attitude and the Medics in particular are notorious partiers.

The infamous 'Sports Night' every wednesday at the Imperial Union Bar is apparently messy.
I go to Imperial and I'm a walking, talking party.

True story.

Oh thanks for your response and that's good to hear as I am a keen sportsman. Hopefully I can hang with the medics then and have a great time!

The sports teams (particularly the rowers I am reliably informed) do seem to live it large so you should fit right in.

Plus the clubs in London are better than in Durham

If you're ultimately aiming at FO Banking it's obvious that Imperial is the better decision

Be warned, along with the department of computing, the medics like to separate themselves to a point where they like to consider they go to a different university than the rest of Imperial.

Imperial? You might as well get drunk and go on the underground. The probability of making friends is the same.

I'm not saying partying doesn't happen. But it's WEIRD. Imperial is WEIRD. Not to mention accomodation man.

Exactly, how are you going to socialise with them.

I don't get how Imperial gets this massive 'geek' tag that everyone goes along with; it's really not bad!

The boy to girl ratio is rather high though.

It's weird. I never said it's geeky.

True to an extent, but if you are in the same halls as medics then they're not exactly going to refuse to be friends with you simply based on subject.

No. But at the same time if they're going out with their medic friends you're not going to get an invite to tag along.

Fair enough! Wouldn't say it's weird either though!

Well for Medic specific events I suppose so but not on a normal night out unless they're really unfriendly people!

They're all medic only events! That's my point

They have their own societies as well, there will be a basketball society, and then a medic basketball society. I find it a little pathetic they have to have their own everything, tbh.

That's not true! I had loads of medic friends when I was there (of course I knew quite a few before Imperial which would've helped but they certainly didn't kick me or my maths friends out - quite the opposite!)

Work hard play harder was definitely the attitude of most people I met at Imperial and I had a great time there.
