Because Universities need to get their money from somewhere in order to fund your precious education. Now that the Government have cut funding, they're turning to people to pay for their Uni places.

Putting it into perspective though, it costs the government £250k to train one doctor. At £9k a year, I'd say that I'm in for a good deal, tbh. Also, more perspective for you, in America it's far far farrrr more expensive to go to a good Uni than over here (admittedly, their accommodation is included in the price).
