Thanks for making this thread im about to choose Sussex over Queen Mary and was wondering what kind of links in industry Sussex have for work placements, for example Kent University offered placements at IBM.

Also I was wondering how sociable people are on campus and how the atmosphere at sussex is like generally?

How did people find the foundation year? I assume there must be some people on the course that have come from the Foundation year at Crawley. What was their experience like? I'm being put off doing this course due to the fact it looks like another year of college. It seems to have no ties to the Uni, doesn't seem like it will be as social, (I'm 20 so the idea of socialising and becoming friends with people just leaving school and going into college is not appealing at all, I've been working in industry with adults for over a year now). Crawley does not sound like a great place to live, I'm used to Bristol city where I've been living in a house share, so going into a family's spare room is not something I'm considering.

Just out of interest, are you a student there now then?....

Couple of questions would be again like the poster above how have people on the course rated the foundation year in crawley ( i've actually firmed it, so dont make it sound dreadful haha)

Secondly after going to the applicant open day a month back I heard that by the time we get to the 3rd year they might have introduced a placement year that would be available to us.... Any news on this ? although it may be unlikely as its not relevant to current students

as for crawley, I can say having lived in Brighton all my life, it isnt the best place, and the Central Sussex College does look a little like a 3rd year of 6th form but I need it to get into undergraduate so i'm game

I would also like to know more about the introduction of the placement year which I was also told about at an open day.

Are you planning on staying in Brighton or moving into Crawley host house?
I think I'll have to look into shared housing in Brighton, and catching the train to College every day.

Who else is doing the foundation year?
I shall be thumbing my limp penis into the foundation year. Don't really know about living with a family in Crawley, I would feel like an intruder all the time.

Yeh I'm currently a student there at the moment, the foundation year is great, as it skims the surface of what your going to dive into in the course itself, so it is not all new and you won't be completely new to the material covered in lectures. Ill check into the placement year. However, note that it is possible to do this anyway, as you can delay your studies for a year for internships or placements. Many are available around Sussex Uni in Brighton area anyway

There are many different links to the industry. If its the games industry your after, Brighton is huge on the gaming scene. The careers office and several informatics tutors regularly send emails about companies that are after different interns, including one of our courses being sponsored by a local organisation, who often approach the best programmers. The careers office is brilliant at setting you up for this with CV altering, etc.

We have people on the course that have been proficient programmers for 3/4 years. If your comfortable with informatics then great, come to Sussex! Personally i would recommend being pretty proficient in mathematics, logic, computer hardware and a little experience in programming would be brilliant, the more the better

Personally, Crawley is Okay as an area but not wonderful. I didn't do the foundation year, but i know for a fact the people who did found it a lot easier to settle in with the heavy work and the more difficult assignments. If you need it to get in, it is worth it.

Furthermore, Brighton is great to live in as you'll be able to settle in and either drive or grab the train to Crawley, which is about 30 minutes north
