But many mines were profitable and worthwhile. I think you're missing the point here - Thatcher took a tough line against the miners because they were wanting to dictate what the government should do and shouldn't do. Heck, Scargill declared that he wanted to overthrow the government. She didn't go after them because they were uneconomic. The Thatcher government wasn't in the business of cutting loose and tackling every industry that was unprofitable.

yeah how dare citizens in a democracy tell their goverment what to do
here's a video that might help you, it have various opinions

Suprisingly a balanced view from the Guardian.

I do find it a bit off putting demonstrating at a funeral though. But atleast will live in a society where that's allowed.
Margaret Thatcher was the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom. She closed many businesses including the steel production in the United Kingdom so that more steel would be imported. However during her time as prime minister, an economical depression fell on the whole country due to some of her actions.

I'm sorry what! You've clearly never heard of the Lawson boom nor looked at the facts. Additionally, for every manufacturing worker that suffered there was a service sector worker who thrived and bought their own home.

As much as a noisy minority wish you to see her as the devil, she is consistently voted as the best PM since WW2.
I don't know why people hate her.

In the 70s the unions were far too powerful, we had public services that we ineffecient and high levels of inflation. She sorted all those problems out and after 35 years of right wing governments the country is now richer because of it.

People hate her because they are stupid, they don't understand the problems before she came to power and lump anything bad that happened after her.

She stole all the milk!
I can understand why the lefties hate her but also from a free market sense she was pretty bad as well.

BT wanted to stick fibre in the ground in the 90s, she stopped that and earned my hatred.
She's dead, irrelevant, move on, goodbye.
I hate her because she was soft on crime, wanting to shut down prisons, her liberal approach to law and order is what really sticks in my gut because successive leaders have copied this.
Why did anyone ever hate the Tories? Same reason...

It's not so much that more people think she was an excellent PM, but that she was a very polarising figure, so more people who liked her would regard her as the 'best'.

Regarding the recession, her non-interventionist policies were a significant cause of the problems in the early 80s.

Very true, until a few years i viewed her as tantamount to a god. Even my parents (lefties) view her with admiration for taking on unions which they say wanted to run the country. Others though despise her.

Yeah. I don't think she was to blame for it per say but her policies initially certainly poured fuel on the unemployment fire. It wasn't until 85-89 that everything was really starting to pay dividends.

As much as i think people need to let her go on both sides, the Thatcherite consensus is still the prevailing economic paradigm for the government today and Labour only really dropped it last summer.

Thatcher's impact on politics is comparable to Peel/Gladstone and Attlee (albeit a socialist consensus had been building since the 1890's). Few leaders create a lasting legacy for decades.
She was in power long before I was born so I don't have a clue either

An Incredible woman and best Prime Minister of the 20th century (along with Churchill and Atlee). Go back to the 70s and you will thank her so much. RIP Maggie Thatcher
