17 during freshers week

Im going to Queen Margaret Uni and I turn 18 on the 22nd of September so I’m going to miss being 18 for freshers by a few weeks. Will I still be able to make friends and have fun during freshers??
Of course. No one is going to be able to tell that you're 17. You're really not going to look any different to everyone else. You'll hardly be the first 17 year old to drink alcohol if you do end up doing that, but equally there are more university students then ever before who do not drink alcohol out of choice, so you're not going to either stand out or miss out. You'll be fine.
You might have a little trouble getting into clubs but there will be ways around that but you’ll totally be able to have fun and make friends at uni your birthday will be a really messy night.

Hey!

Lots of people in Scotland will be 17 when they move to university- so don't worry about being the only one!

During our Fresher's Week, the club events are open to under 18s, but obviously alcohol won't be served unless you have proof you are 18+. You can still attend the events with your new friends, so you definitely won't miss out! There are also events that run all through the day during the week, which are great opportunities to meet others. Lots of flats will often host pres or flat parties which you can be involved with too. There are plenty of opportunities to meet and bond with new friends that don't involve being 18, so you will still definitely have fun

All the best, hope this helps!

Hi there,

Absolutely! Turning 18 a few weeks after freshers won't stop you from making friends and having fun. While some events might be age-restricted, there will be plenty of other activities where you can meet new people and enjoy yourself. Many universities also host a variety of non-alcoholic events during freshers' week. Remember, university is about more than just parties. It's about meeting diverse people, learning new things, and growing as a person. You'll have plenty of opportunities to socialise and make friends throughout your time at Queen Margaret Uni, not just during freshers' week. So, don't worry too much and look forward to the exciting journey ahead!

Take care,
Ilya
