The unprecedented Law with French Thread - faites de la participation!

Quite proud that the thread name rhymes!

How many offers do you have, for which universities and for what grades?
Are you still waiting and if so for where?
How is your academic and extra curricular background?
Do you have any stats on how unbelievably competitive this course is this year?
AND
What do you hope to do once the degree is finished?

I am waiting for four - Notts (after test), UCL (after good interview), LSE (after waiting list and forwarding mock results) and KCL (heard nothing).
Also applied to Trinity College Dublin (don't get offers till august)
10 A*s, 7 subject prizes, four A's, 100% in 9 modules, adore la France et le droit etc etc etc.
Hope to qualify as French barrister and work in Paris or French town like la Guerande.

Merci beaucoup pour des réponses que vous ferez!

I only applied to this course for one university, because I applied to different courses in the rest... and the uni I applied to was LSE. The offer they made is AAB, one of the As in French, of course. My academic and extracurricular background, is ok, but not as good as yours. I know that the course is very competitive, for LSE, about 4 or 5% make it and for other unis, it is probably a tad less competitive than that but still very much so. If I do take up their offer I will probably become barrister/solicitor in either country (probably easier in Britain, but not really sure about that either) or work for the EU or the UN, or something like that.

J'espère que cela vous aide et bonne chance avec les universités et tout le reste!

Essex offers a "French and European Law" course, where you study at Essex for two years and then go to Nanterre (Paris X) for two years. After that, I believe, you've got both an English LLB and a Maitrise en Droit in French.

Salut!

I have applied for law and french (law), and at the moment my first choice offer is from UCL, of AAA which I believe to be their standard offer. Having been rejected from Cambridge, I am still waiting to hear back from KCL, which could potentially be my second choice, otherwise I'm holding two other offers, with Leeds as my second choice for the moment.

In terms of my background, academically - clutch of A*s/As at GCSE, with AAAA at AS, with some very good module marks.
This is coupled with a fair range of extra-curricular activities, RAF cadets, Y.E., clarinet to name a few, and of course also the obligatory love for all things french and legal!

I think that's all you asked for! Good luck to you and any others with the rest of their applications!

Btw, at universities such as UCL/KCL, did you apply for law and french law or the maitrise?

hiya - I was advised not to do this particular course, but unfortionately have my heart set on it. Applied to Nottingham (taken test), Bristol (offer AAB), Cardiff (offer ABB), Exeter (offer AAA), Oxford (rejection) and UCL (have an interview in 3 weeks, really wnat to go here!). I have 9A*S and 1A (textiles) GCSE, and 4A's AS and predicted for A2. extra cirricular = dancing, drama, singing, volunteering, D of E etc etc.
Have always loved french and hope to live in south of France one day. Barrister would be ideal job, using linguistic skills if possible.
Is this not the hardest course we could have applied for???!

hey, I applied for these kind of courses too...
so far I'm waiting for Nottingham, got rejected from Cam, and have offers from Exeter (maîtrise), Warwick, Manchester and Reading.
Competition is REAAAALLY high! (Even non-London unis - Manc had 160 applicants for 11 places.... :s) I'm having trouble deciding between Exeter (open day weds ) - to get the actual French degree = v gd I think, and supposedly *more established* unis like Warwick and Manc, to study law and French but not for an actual French degree.... decisions....
But yeah I'm similar to you lot!! How boring...

Hi, nice to know there are other Maitrise people out in the world and that I'm not the only one still waiting from KCL!

Got pooled by Clare College, Cambridge but not fished out, sadly, have offers from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Manchester but I am waiting on the decision from KCL. If no KCL this year, I'm taking a year out to do a French Law course in France and some junior work around the UK and France. Made some stupid mistakes in choosing unis, but it could turn out for the best in the end, who knows. Have 5 A grades in Scottish Highers and predicted 3 A grades at Advanced Higher level. I'm currently doing modules in French culture at my local Alliance Francaise too. Trying to get a cheap flight out to Paris in the near future amidst it all avec Ryanair but no such luck yet.

I'm hoping to end up in an International firm in France, maybe specialising in Human Rights or European Law.

Good luck everyone, keep in touch.

Hey
I was pooled from Clare College too!

Do you have any idea how many people were pooled or how many of those pooled got offers? I heard there were 8 offers made and then someone else told me 10? What did you hear?

Interestingly enough, I applied for the double at KCL and just law with french at UCL. Don't worry about your UCL interviews - they are actually really lovely people, and v ery personalised.
The scary thing is that as well as supporting each other, these professors are pitting us against one another. I hope to see at least one of you at uni next year!

Ps - where would your dream destination for your year abroad be? Mine would Pantéon Assas Paris II, or Poiters.

Hiya

I phoned the Admissions at Clare and they said that 8 had been made offers (for 7 places) and that 4 had been pooled from Clare and no one had been picked up. They said they were really disappointed because usually everyone who gets pooled from Clare for Law gets picked up, however this year, increased applications elsewhere etc etc. I didn’t apply to UCL heard a not so nice story about the interview of an acquaintance last year so I didn’t apply probably shouldn’t have let it put me off! My dream destination in France for studying? Paris I or II, Lyon or Aix-en-Provence.

Anyways, should really get back to my Modern Studies dissertation!

Thank you so much for this information!

Its been a long time coming to me as my teacher did not ask the right questions at the end of the whole débacle! I could be looking at a gap year also as I have no offers, having applied to all the most competitive places.
Has anyone heard about this new law test that we have to do next November for law? It should make things even harder.

Ecossaise, I'd take it you're reapplying to cam then?

I would reapply to Cambridge should I not get an offer at KCL this year - have no idea about which college though, I'd definitely check around colleges first, if it came to that (which it could well!) If I don't get into KCL this year, I'll be planning my gap year very carefully and trying to get as much time in France as possible, to try and be a strong Maitrise candidate.

It is so frustrating having to wait on this - I could have had unconditional offers from any Scottish uni I wanted, but because the Maitrise courses only run in England, it means another year of pressure whilst everyone else is having fun and an 'easy year'.

I saw the sample questions for the Law test and they do seem quite over the top and ridiculous, but do-able. I think the best way however, is for universities to request specific subjects, to try and cut down on this wave of Law candidates. They do this in Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Strathclyde etc)- request an A in Higher English (which is not that easy to get) and unis here don't seem to be as overwhelmed as down South with Law applicants.

Oh and would anyone know other law with french courses with 2 years in each country. We're not well informed about these things here I'm afraid I'm actually studying law at the university of Nice

I would reapply to Cambridge should I not get an offer at KCL this year - have no idea about which college though, maybe St Catherine's or Newnham. I'm not too sure though, I'd definitely check around more colleges first, if it came to that (which it could well!) I might have to reapply too because I have no offers into March!

If I was reapplying to Cam, I would apply to either Trinity Hall or Newnham - could you keep me posted if we both end up doing that as I don't want to compete directly with you! I would rather us both get in than one to top the other!! Lol
Can Clare give you your placing on the pool list if you ring them?
Ta for all the replies people - much appreciated!
Reply 15
I don't think Clare even have such a thing as a "Pool list" - I think us four candidates were just "thrown in" so to speak and left to float about for other colleges to fish out as they wanted. I wouldn't worry about such a thing - to be one of the top 12 out of 65 at Clare College, Cambridge is a very good thing in itself.

I will definitely let you know though what's happening re. if I do decide to reapply for 2005 - it's good to have the moral support of another 'crazy' person like myself throwing myself into the deep end of the uni scale!

Is that Kings College London or Cambridge? I had no idea you had to have an interview for Kings in Paris if it is! Sorry about the rejection - your post is very interesting, I'm just slightly confused.

I applied to King's for the Double Maitrise - is this the same thing?
Oh - and are you fluent in French?
