Transferring univeristy HELP

Hi all
I am currently a student at royal Holloway university of london. I sent my application for transferring univeirsties. I have got an unconditional offer from Aston university but i have to start from first year again the reasons that i want to transfer are:

I am not enjoying my time at this university
The teachers are not friendly or they don't make the lecture as interesting as it should be.
the labs are small.
the location of the university is really bad.
And I wanna be closer to home

to be honest I dont mind starting it again because I want to be happy with where I live and want to enjoy my time although i do not party and i dont go out every weekend. but i want to enjoy the place that i live and i wanna be in a big city with vibe and energy.

PLEASE help me to decide what to choose
Uni of Leeds!! Top 100 in the world, one of the best in the UK, aim to be in top 50 by 2015, great social life, email me for more details because I live close to it

Those are exactly the reasons why I dropped out 3 weeks ago. All I can say is that you should enjoy your time at uni and if you don't then I don't really see the point of staying. I just kind of thought that if I didn't enjoy the experience and theres a chance that I wont use my degree, I am wasting my time by staying there. So I applied to a different uni for september.

Hope this has helped!

I'm in the exact same situation. I'm so worried about transferring in September, because it'll be like a whole new start all over again. So worried about making friends etc:frown:. Good luck xxxx

Dear all. Thanks for all the replies. But can you tell me which one to CHOOSE?
ASTON vs ROYAL HOLLOWAY?
thank you.
Well if you hate Royal Holloway, I'd go with Aston

Find out what you can about the course itself at Aston to make sure that the teaching and labs look better.

I'm assuming Aston is closer to your home, so that solves that problem. Can't comment on the location of the uni or the city itself though I'm afraid x

If you're unhappy at RH and moving to aston will help make you happy then go for it. An extra year at uni (plus you'd get the option to do a placement year which is great for finding a good job) is not much in the grand scheme of things.

If you don't move and end up regretting the decision then you will be in the same situation but with a year passed by and the same problem.

Have you visited aston?

Also have you spoken to RH about what their policies are about leaving halls early/not completing the year. If you stick it out and pass the year then most universities will give you a CertHE for that (which at least means you have something to show for your year to put on your CV) - but if you'd rather just leave then it might be that you need to leave by a certain date in order to avoid paying full fees/rent for the whole year.

I'm at Royal Holloway (literally typing this from Bedford Library), and I was in the same position as you when I was in my first year. However, I didn't go through with it because of the higher fees. Ultimately you should choose somewhere you would like and know you will be able to work better and where you can get the best out of the uni experience - not just academically but also the soul of uni life - socialising etc. Perhaps you should also consider what you are studying and which university is better for that course. I'm guess you are studying Biosciences as you mentioned labs? Let me know if you have any other questions as I could help with any specifics too.

Thank you. I will finish my first year for sure and I am aiming for above 65%. Univeristy of leicester has tild me to apply for second year in june/JULY with 65% above for each module so I want to finish this year with a good grade.

Well I'm studying Biology and have some lectures with Biomedics. All I can say is that the work load is very very intense for molecular students. So if you feel that being in a place where you are unhappy will impede on your work ethic, get out while you can (after first year) and move to Aston. You have already expressed why you want to move and those reasons do seem valid. However, in terms of reputation, I would think RHUL is better, although I have not looked at league tables or World league tables. RHUL is fairly strong and has strong European links, Aston I'm not too sure about. Also, now that I know what you're studying, bear in mind that the Bioscience department at RHUL is very strong, especially in terms of research; it gets a crazy amount of funding and so its pretty well known. I don't think Aston is a research intensive university. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you wish to work in research perhaps at RHUL it would be easier to build contacts esp. with other UoL colleges. In my experience all the problems that you are experiencing with RHUL (similar to those I experiences) kind of go away especially after first year, mainly because there isn't time to be dwelling on changing university or all the negatives about the university you attend... mainly because there is so much work to do! That said, in my second year, most people are more relaxed (socially) so it's easier to make friends, and you get to pick modules so you can avoid certain lecturers. Also, you get to have lectures with new people (ie. with Organismal students) so you get to make new friends that way too (obviously depending on your module choices in 2nd/3rd year). Also labs too small? Have a walk around Borne, some labs can accommodate over 100 people, that isn't small at all. In 2nd year/ 3rd year you will use these depending on modules chosen!

So in conclusion, things do get better and you can overcome the problems you are currently facing with time (well, most of them anyway). But if you feel that its going to be a huge problem (ie. prevent you from getting that coveted 2i or 1st class degree) go!
