Using mindfulness techniques can be great for preventing panic attacks, certainly has helped me in the past.

Never heard of 7/11 breathing before! Thanks for explaining what it is - might try that next time I feel an anxiety attack looming :colondollar:

Ahhhh I'm so pleased to have helped. You can breathe in for 5 and out for 9 if you prefer - just as long as your out-breath is for longer your body will naturally relax

Mental health tips: what do you do for your mental health?

I've never struggled particularly with mental health, but I think that remembering to make time to socialise and do stuff outside your degree is really important - so I always make time to go to the pub once a week as I think it has a preventative effect. Seeing your friends and having a natter does do you good - you need to unwind sometimes!

I have, however, seen someone struggle with MH at uni, and what I will say is that there is help out there, both from your GP and your uni's counselling service. I've seen them work wonders, so if you feel like you could do with a bit of help, use them! It's completely confidential. And don't forget about Nightline too - I've heard very good things about them.

I did know that, actually! :awesome:

I think the post above gives great advice. It's important to have some social/recreation/down time. Also important to let people know how you're feeling :yep:

Other tips include like healthy eating, fresh air, making sure you see sunlight everyday, and making sure you've spoken to someone each day. I sometimes found that especially during dissertation time, it could be easy to go a day without having left your room (esp. if ensuite!) or spoken to someone :frown:

Another thing is it's important to recognise the signs early on and to get help as soon as you can. Don't be afraid of being ridiculed or looking stupid. I've been told that had I been put on antipsychotic medication during/after my first psychotic episode, I probably wouldn't be so ill atm :colondollar:

Went down to the stalls out at uni today  had decided I'd be confident and talk to someone, but then just circled round and left... :erm: Partly because I'm seeing the counsellor on Friday, anyway :yep:

Well done! That's brilliant that you felt confident enough to go down there in first place, that's a really positive step. Good luck with your session on Friday  Is it your first one?

Just glad I didn't see anyone I knew! Thanks  it's my 2nd/follow-up one, not really sure what's going to happen, but guess I'll just see - found the last one good just to be able to talk freely about stuff, though haven't really improved at all since it, either. Partly my fault for not doing everything we mentioned, ish, but we'll see :s-smilie:

It sounds like it's still early days for you, so just take your time  It will be interesting for you to see how you feel after your second session. In my experience the first session is as you say, talking freely about stuff..... offloading, the following sessions can hopefully be about focusing on the positive change you want to see

Stick with it! It's definitely worthwhile according to friends who have used equivalent services, but it can take a bit of time to work.

Excellent point, I might have to use that one on my psychiatrist.
