American internship for a month

I'm studying forensics and criminology at uni and I always have a little thought of going to work in America at some point. I've found probably the only internship that allows non Americans to do it but now I'm stuck on how to afford living there for a month.

So basically, has anyone else done this sort of thing? Obviously it's a non paid internship so I have to find money for flights, living, travel and food. Can I stay at a nearby uni accommodation? Is there an amount of money that I could get from my uni to help with some of the costs?
