Network monitoring

I've looking around a bunch of the Cambridge college websites, and it seems that the policy is that porn isn't allowed to be accessed over the uni network, and you have to find some other way of getting it (phone data, magazines, etc). Is that actually enforced?

Lost access to my original account, but does anyone know whether or not this is actually monitored?
The accurate answer is probably 'varies by college' but I don't think most of them really care, otherwise I imagine they'd be deaning 99% of the student body at some point.

Just don't go over traffic limits because then they actually do check what you were up to . . . and it's one thing to be called up to explain why you torrented the latest CoD, but quite another to have to explain 10 gigs of midget porn.
Just dug out my copy of the IT policy from my college (Pembroke) and it seems fairly intentionally vague, merely mentioning stuff along the lines of 'inappropriate use'. In practice though the only thing they really don't like is peer-to-peer stuff like torrenting, because it could cripple the rest of the college's network by taking up too much bandwidth, and they have specific software to detect that. Other than that it's completely infeasible for them to watch everyone's access all the time, so I'd imagine you'd only get clamped down on if what you were accessing was seriously dodgy or was causing the college problems.

And to be honest, if you did go so far as to get called out on it you won't be the first and I seriously doubt you'd be the last.
