RAF survival equipment fitter application

hi all ,
I'm new to the student room but it has been extremely helpful so far getting me prepared for my selection interview on the 3rd or july. I am applying for survival equipment fitter as the tittle may suggest but i am having trouble finding out more detailed information about the role, what equipment they work with and what specific areas could i be put in. any information would be helpful?

A quick search of Google doesn't really come up with much except the RAF website job description and this article which you've probably already seen - https://www.gov.uk/government/news/squippers-packing-a-punch-on-op-ellamy

Truth is, for the interview, they don't expect you to know much more information than what is available. If you do, then great. But generally, you should just know the basics that you can find on the website. Know where and how long your training is, and all the qualifications you will gain throughout the training and your first posting.

My dad is a Squipper (Survival Equipment) in RAF. They do a lot of stuff from fitting flying helmets to working with life rafts and even packing parachutes.

Hi buddy. I'm a Squipper based at Brize so any questions just ask me. Basics about the trade. Once you've done your basic training at Halton, you will go on to your specialist at cosford, which will last around 11 months. On this course you will be taught all of the basic skills to do our job, this consists of starting with how to maintain and pack parachutes (both ejection and paras), life rafts, flying clothing (everything from under garments, anti g suits, flying helmets etc), night vision goggles and handling pyro technics. You will also do maths and IT key skills.
Once you graduate from cosford you will get your posting to which ever camp you have picked(or whatever they pick for you).
And that's it really, you have to learn about the specific equipment once you get to your new unit and do what's called trade ability tests to get your SAC, but that's easy and nothing to worry about.
Where abouts in the country are you? And have you thought of doing a visit to a section and seeing what it's all about?

Most of all good luck with it and any questions just ask.

Hi Lewis thank you that was more helpful than the RAF website.
I live in Sheffield and all the staff at the AFCO said it is very hard to get a visit to a section, I was wondering if there are many female Squippers and anything that you did before you joined that helped in training or the job ? Thanks again.

Yes there are quite a few female squippers. For example there are 2 here at Brize and I know quite a few about. No there's nothing you need to do to prepare for the trade really, cosford is really good so they will teach you everything you need to know. Cracking trade though we have a good laugh and there are loads of opportunities once your in to progress. That's a shame about the visit.
i know this is abit late to reply but im also looking at applying as a squipper and am just wondering if they get to do any more practical tasks that require you to be out and about i.e. patrols or is that mainly Regiment?

When deployed on the sort of operations when that goes on, then yes, you'd do your turn. But it's a bit like asking 'When I'm at school, will I be a bus monitor?'. Chances are pretty high you'll go an a school trip at some point, but whether you'll be picked to be bus monitor depends on the trip, the company, if you volunteer etc.

This isn't a thing you should be spending much time on. If you aren't prepared to go out on patrol, then don't join the Armed Forces. If you want to spend a lot of time out on patrol, then there are far better options than Squipper.

Hello, with a squipper role do you get to work close with the aircraft’s? I originally wanted to apply for aircraft tech but it’s not been offered on my AST and survival equipment specialist did as well as other roles, but survivable equipment is the only one closest to the engineering department, I’d like a really hands on role that I’ll be able to travel around with which I think I’ll be able to do with this, I’ve just not had chance to look into it properly as it wasn’t even on my radar before my ast. Any pros/cons greatly appreciated
