Help please

So i'm an idiot, i left my homework till last minute. I'm stuck on how to factorise these expressions. Here's what i've got so far for 3i, am i on the right tracks?

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1409692444.834678.jpg

(X+4)^2-(x-3)^2

X^2+8x+16 - x^2-6x+9

X^2+4x+4x+16 - x^2-3x-3x+9

X(x+8)+16 - x(x-6)+9

Thanks

It's not wrong, but it isn't what you're supposed to do, I don't think. You should use the formula for the difference of two squares, not just FOIL it all out.

Not all wrong, just pointless

What's the formula? I'm still confused sorry

When you have an expression in the form z2 - y2, it can be factorised to (z-y)(z+y). In this case, (x+4) is z and (x-3) is y.

(X^2+4x+4x+16) - (x^2-3x-3x+9)

It's difference of two squares, I made a couple of tweaks (mainly to make it easier to read. But I'm a bit rusty so I am afraid that's all I can do

(X+4)^2-(x-3)^2

X^2+8x+16 - x^2-6x+9

X^2+8x+16 - (x^2-6x+9) => X^2+8x+16 -x^2+6x-9=14x+7=7*(2x+1)

X^2+4x+4x+16 - x^2-3x-3x+9

X(x+8)+16 - x(x-6)+9

Thanks

For example:

Okay. So in the question i was attempting, its (x+16)^2 - (x+9)^2?

(blah)^2 - (something)^2 = (blah + something)(blah - something)

Ok but then how do i factorise it?

Sorry?

That is how you factorise it - what else would you need to do?

What answer do you have?
