Hey, my dad (who i see very rarely) is coming up to see me on Monday and wants to take me out for a meal, I was just wondering where in Durham you would all reccommend to go. I'm open to any suggestions but really like Italian!!! Thanks!!!

You're in the right place if you like Italian food then, there are stacks of Italians!

My recommendations would be as follows:

Che Vita! (up by the Gilesgate Travelodge, walk up Claypath and it's over the other side of Gilesgate roundabout opposite Hild and Bede, it is good and they often have a half price meal deal). The other good thing about Che Vita! is that it is very close to the Woodman, which is my favourite pub in Durham.

Emilios on Elvet Bridge opposite the Swan and Three- when I first visited Durham to have a look round about four years ago my Dad and I went here, and I went here with friends before the Lion in Winter '05 and we got a meal deal(happy hour before 6.30 on Fridays)

Riccardo's Hallgarth Street, so cheap and not stingy on portions too. Also, you're across the road from the Victoria which is another fantastic pub.

I've been told De Medici's is also good(it's above the arch down to Klute).

Hope that helps.

Wow, i see what you mean about there being plenty of choice!!! Thanks for the suggestions!

P.S. Are there any other restaurants that you HAVE to go to in Durham (just for future reference!)?
If your dad is of the money-lavishing variety, then I'd suggest either Bistro21 or Oldfields for an absolutely awesome meal. The Court Inn (by the court, surprisingly) is very good and also reasonably priced.

The Hogs Head is even better if you're there reviewing records for Purple Radio as they give you loads of loads of free food.

I'm not a fan of the New Inn per se, but I know I haven't eaten there but still it seems a little plasticky to me, and I don't feel it has any soul whatsoever when I've been in there.

I only suggested Emilios because it's an Italian I've been to, I didn't think it was outrageously awful but felt Che Vita is a lot better but as I'm not a massive Italian fan(it's nice once or twice but after that it gets a little boring) I can't possibly comment on every single Italian restaurant in Durham.

As for my favourites they are as follows Che Vita, The Seven Stars at Shincliffe(you get a shark sized fish if you order fish and chips and they serve Black Sheep Special on draught) and Shaheens(if only for the mad waiters and the very close proximity to college).

I've been told to avoid Oldfields by a couple of friends who weren't impressed and said it was far too overpriced for what it was.

They don't give you as much sauce now though.

And they don't serve the awesome onion rings from my first year anymore

Still awesome though.

The Pump House is awesome, but expensive so only go there if you want to exploit your dad haha.
I hate Shaheens, the waiters annoy me. The Capital is the best Indian in Durham. Mmmmmmm.

That's it really isn't it, the battle of the Indian Restaurant's right next to one another. I've been told by another friend that the Capital is good but that the Rajpooth is rubbish, but then I was told exactly the opposite by an ex housemate of mine and my boyfriend said the Rajpooth was good and they gave you massive portions too.

Well, in my opinion, yes Rajpooth gives you MASSIVE portions, but they are just huge piles of average food, and I found it far too much.
At the Capital the food is gorgeous, really well prepared, the portions are perfect and the service is brilliant.

Medici is the best Italian in Durham by far.

The food at the Capital gave me an allergic reaction and be really quite ill. Admittedly it was my own fault for not telling them I'm allergic to nuts, but I'm still not going back in a hurry.

What did you eat?

What did you eat?

It was a mixed plate. Theoretically there shouldn't have been nuts in any of it. It tasted damn good til my throat and lips started swelling up and I puked.
Went to Bella Italia two weeks ago with my parents and boyfriend, that's really nice and with a gorgeous view over the river.

I forgot about that Kathryn. I know how hard and annoying it is though to ask about nuts in everything.... luckily most main meals over here don't tend to be cooked with nuts. I can't eat ANY chocolate spread at all though, which is a bit of an annoyance but I tend to drink beer instead as my vice.:p:
