hmmmmmmmm pathetic? you talk about that as pathetic?!

errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm has it got anything to do with you?......................NO! so why are you here? LEAVE!

just because MUMMY and DADDY throw you money for being a good little fellow does not give you the right to be a pile of ****.

people get ema because they're household is on a lower income. how the **** do expect people to live if they're parents can't afford to give them money all the time?

you must be one spoiled little brat to bother wasting time on here making stupid comments about something that doesn't even concern you in the slightest and to talk about parents' SUCCESS. you must of had a great upbringing there kidda to think you're that superior.

'my mummy is better than yours' HOW OLD ARE YOU? i can't get over your immaturity. you actually make me laugh!

go do some fox hunting or smoke a pipe or maybe eat some caviar (to kill some time before the inheritance comes through) DARLING because no one likes a spoiled immature arrogant bastarding **** like you.

this is personal by the way, i'd hate to meet you because i bet you're even worse in person. go make some friends too babe. i wish you the very best of luck in trying to be something you're not xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

How is that being immature or even implying I'm 'superior'?
I didn't get EMA when I was at college, you guys do, therefore my parents DO earn more and by extension ARE more successful...
And the government rewards them for that success by having to pay for your clothes/games/other ******** things you buy through taxes as well as stuff for me.

'how do expect people to live if they're parents can't afford to give them money all the time?'

Um...sorry?
'Expecting people to live' generally makes it sound like people are starving. Spending it on 'January sales' isn't a necessity, and it's quite pathetic that youre happ to have the state intervene with what you buy in the January sales.

********.
Why do you need £30 a week, when it's supposed to be for educational pruposes?
If the government said 'we'll pay for worse off kids bus passes and give them vouchers for ryman/partners instead of throwing money at them' then all would be fine and dandy, but right now they're giving you money to blow on alcohol, clothes and games when you should be spending it on college trips and books.

Why do you assume that evryone who receives EMA blows it silly things such as alcohol and clothes?
EMA is a positive discrimination initiative, obviously people will exploit the system. Life isn't fair, you can stop and dwell on how unfair everything is or you can move on.

I don't think everyone does use it on stuff they shouldn't, but a large proportion certainly do, and if the voucher system was implemented then no-one could use it for these purposes, without anyone losing the ability to fund their education.
Also, this would be unable to be 'exploited', as you said.
Life isn't fair, and EMA isn't fair. This way we can make it fairer, instead of 'moving on'.

Are you actually able to substantiate that claim or are you just a bilious Daily mail reader?

Well I'm able to substantiate it in terms of my own experiences.
All of my friends used it on for purposes other than 'educational maintenence'. In this thread alone EMA-'earners' are talking about using it for the January sales rather than 'I need that EMA to pay for an upcoming trip'.
People at my college actually BOASTED about getting free money to use on alcohol on a Friday, these were people in my Politics class etc.
So from my view, yes, the average EMA'-earner' does use it for ******** stuff.

All of which is irrelevent. I'm not against the principle of EMA, in fact, I support it. But it's impossible to need £30 a week for educational stuff. Bus passes cost a max of £80 a TERM. You also can't spend more than £30 on stuff like paper and pens in a term. So why not implement this voucher and free bus pass system anyway? It would save money, and no-one loses out in terms of education.

Give me a reason why people MUST have £30 a week, and why a voucher system wouldn't work.

I don't read the Daily Mail, btw.
That's called anecdotal evidence and in the grown up world it isn't worth a fig. You probably just have the wrong sort of friends.
I don't have to give you a reason. Voucher systems are usually advocated by the sort of rabidly right wing buffoons that haven't realised how much it would cost to administer.

So you can say 'you have the wrong sort of friends' but I can't give you my situational view of how EMA is spent?
I have yet to meet anyone who has said 'I needed all of that £30 to stay studying at college', that means that of the hundreds of people who I know to have gotten EMA and talked too about it, not one of them actually needed it as a matter of urgency.

Okay, not a voucher system (although I fail to see how it would cost anymore than the billion pound EMA does, can you tell me why it would?). Why not just give colleges a certain amount of money, which 'needy' students can dip into when necessary, there's a phrase to describe such a system but I can't remember what it is.
To do well at school/college you need to be happy, to be happy you need to socialise and relax, to do this you need money, therefore there is EMA.

And that is bull.
Get a bloody job, all we're teaching people is 'you can depend on the state to fund your nights out.' Things like this have degraded this country into a nanny state full of moaners and spongers.

And if that IS the reason for EMA, why the **** is it called Education Maintenence Allowance.
Dunno about you but for me that name suggests the money is there to 'maintain your education', not, 'socialise and relax on the backs the taxpayer'. It's pathetic, as are the people trying to justify it by saying 'zomgz i need to relax'.
Also, if it was there to give people money to socialise, why don't high school students get it?
Hell, lets give it to primary school students, they need money for toys too.

people who's parents have money buy them clothes, give them pocket money etc.

those that can't, get ema. if it was purposely for buying pencils and books then they would give vouchers wouldn't they but they know that parents can't afford their general living costs and aren't able to buy them clothes and other things people need. so ema can be used for that. so chill out alexio.

Ok kids. Shut up now.

This topic was in relation to EMA bonuses, not "Is EMA fair?".
I Believe Ema is more of an incentive for 18 Years to go to college instead of sitting at home on the Dole

"Young people shouldn't need a bonus of £100 every six months to convince them to stay on - not on top of the weekly money they're receiving."

I have to say i only just about manage to buy everything i need for my course with my weekly payment of £30. I'm studying Art and Design you see and my course consists of 3 8 week projects which i have to complete, after the 8 weeks are up i get another 3 projects and start again. This goes on for 2 years untill my course is complete. Now i wouldnt mind if all i needed to complete these projects were a pen and paper, i wish! But no i need a lot of materials which the college does not supply for me. I study photography, Fine art and Multi Media which are the 3 different projects that i have. For each subject/Project i have to produce a sketch book full of ideas, drawings anything really. These sketch books must be A3 and cost me 6 pounds each I then have to produce 3 maybe 4 final art pieces for each project which costs a lot of money for the materials.

Im very greatful to have 30 pounds a week to help me do this, and i can say that i do not spend my EMA on anything other than my bus fair to and from college, my trip and studio fee, and also the materials i need to complete each project i get.

thanks for raising that point about art and design. i completed 6th form and I am now doing a foundation diploma before uni next year. and it has turned out to be the single most expensive year of my life, i don't think anyone appreciates how much art supplies cost. Its not like school where they are able to supply you with materials. you actually have to buy it. An A2 sketchbook (so far i have been through around 4 of these) costs £15, and that's not to mention paying £4.00 per marker pen (off which you need a range). these are ALL necessity's for me to pass this course, with out them i would not be able to do so. Ema has really helped out because even though i have a job as well it was not able to cover the overall costs of this year, which also includes paying £20 or so pounds a week in bus fares to get to my collage. to to me Ema is vital. and i am sure many others doing an art and design course feel the same.

Alexio is clearly vexed and jealous, as are most people who are bitter about EMA. Fair enough really, I can see why he's unhappy. Not that gives him the right to act like a prat

EMA is as unfair as the lottery of life. EMA money is just the same as the money mummy and daddy give you. Just because it's from the government doesn't mean it can't be spent on alcohol and clothes. I'm sure everyone here has spent money their parents have given them on such things.

Oh, and Alexio, you're deluded if you think there are enough jobs going around for everyone who gets EMA. In this economic climate, fully qualified, experienced adults can barely get a job, nevermind students.

Yeah, if that's true, which I'm sure it is, why can't you just be given vouchers for the stuff instead?
That way, you STILL GET WHAT YOU NEED, but bastards who blow it on ******** things don't get games and clothes.

How clear do I have to make it that I AM NOT AGAINST THE PRINCIPLE OF EMA. I am simply against giving people £30 cash as an incentive to better themselves.

Oh for gods sake.
EMA is not the same as the 'money mummy and daddy give you' because it is MY 'mummy and daddy' paying for your 'educational maintenence'. Now, this would be fine if it were actually used for EDUCATIONAL MAINTENENCE (Yes, that is what the EM in EMA stands for) but it isn't right that my parents are paying for some random ******** clothes and alcohol. I mean, even if it were named the 'Give to poor people charity tax' instead of EMA, fine, at least it's saying what it is.

But so long as it is called Educational Maintenece Allowance I will continue to argue that it should either be 'voucher-ised', so people who need it to pay for college things still benefit, but the people who want to use it to **** about can't use it.

And you're telling me you can't get a paper round, or even a job in Maccies, Burger King or KFC? They are literally handing out jobs in my local town.
Last time I suggested that to an EMA 'earner', though, he simply looked at me and said 'Ew. I'm not working in Maccies.'
Good to see Labour is feeding the incentive to work with these handouts, right?
