EMA haters are like broken records. People get EMA, get over it. There is no guideline about what the money is to be spent on.

Oh for gods sake.
EMA is not the same as the 'money mummy and daddy give you' because it is MY 'mummy and daddy' paying for your 'educational maintenence'. Now, this would be fine if it were actually used for EDUCATIONAL MAINTENENCE (Yes, that is what the EM in EMA stands for) but it isn't right that my parents are paying for some random ******** clothes and alcohol. I mean, even if it were named the 'Give to poor people charity tax' instead of EMA, fine, at least it's saying what it is.

But so long as it is called Educational Maintenece Allowance I will continue to argue that it should either be 'voucher-ised', so people who need it to pay for college things still benefit, but the people who want to use it to **** about can't use it.

And you're telling me you can't get a paper round, or even a job in Maccies, Burger King or KFC? They are literally handing out jobs in my local town.
Last time I suggested that to an EMA 'earner', though, he simply looked at me and said 'Ew. I'm not working in Maccies.'
Good to see Labour is feeding the incentive to work with these handouts, right?

You're pathetic, mate.

I'd actually like to say sorry for that.
I was just typing what I was thinking as quickly as possible, in my head it didn't sound that bad but out on the forum it looks bad. I was gonna edit it out but I figured I'd leave it as I'd guess someone had already saw.

So yeah, it was pathetic, I apologise.

No problem.
I don't blame people who hate on the EMA system (heck, I would if I didn't get it) but I dont think its fair the amount of stick students get for receiving it. It's not their fault if they qualify it. I am, however, an avid supporter of the 'all or none' argument. Every student should receive payment or none - my older brother never received EMA, but that didn't mean my parents automatically handed him the cash to socialise.

Nah I actually think that only the ones who need it should get it.
I just feel it shouldn't be cash in hand though.
People on £30 a week should get bus passes/transport paid for them, and maybe £40-50 worth of vouchers to spend in Ryman/Partners.
Those on £20 a week should get maybe 2/3 of their bus passes/transport paid for, and the same amount of vouchers.
£10 a week, 1/2 of bus pass/transport and same amount of vouchers.

That way, people get to maintain their education, but government money (that could have been used to improve the colleges themselves, by the way), isn't wasted on booze, etc.

And for the students that actually do use their EMA for stuff they need to study, they're not missing out...
Not like it's gonna change, though.

I knew this thread would turn into an EMA argument

If it's any consolation, EMA bonuses are probably being scrapped in 2011.

So did I.

Locked. Listen in future please.
