Hmmm... perhaps you could look at the specific heat capcity to calculate the energy transfered (E = m*c*change in temperature) . Maybe heat the water with some kind of a metal and measure the power (current * voltage) used to heat the metal (can't remember the name of this equipment) and then use power = energy / time so you would have to time it for a certain period. So from that you can work out the energy transferred with/without washing up liquid. Did a similar experiment in lesson just not with washing up liquid. Just a few ideas.
