Industry pharmacy is to do with big drug companies such as Glaxosmithkline, Astrazeneca etc...

It is extremely hard for MPharm graduates to go into industry. If they're successful in getting a placement, they'd have to take 6 months in industry and 6 months in community/hospital for their pre-reg year. Nottingham seem to take up most of the spaces. When I asked at the interview, they said only around 5 people got in last year  Also King's seem to be a good uni for industry as well.

You'd be more successful by doing a phd first (something like pharmaceutical science or something), then applying for industry.

i dnt understand mustard man- is it difficult for MPharm graduates to become industrial pharmacists? or is it difficult to get an industrial pre reg placement? i just thought hardly anybody went into industry simply due to lack of interest?!!

bath is also really gud for industrial pharmacy stuff!!!
Well to pursue industrial pharmacy as an MPharm graduate, you should really do an industrial placement for your pre-reg. Otherwise it would be near-impossible to get in, unless you have a PHD in something, or similar...

Edit: yeah, I've heard that Bath is good for industry, but last september their online prospectus didn't mention much about the pre-reg industrial placement. But they have added it as an option now...

i never new the uni you go to could have such a big effect on chances of idustrial pharmacy

do you guys no if manc. is highly recognised in the industrial sector of pharmacy?
I asked manc, and they basically said no (after a long-winded explanation). He suggested a post-graduate course before going into industry.
Yeah they said that to me aswell

That's not strictly true. Especially when you consider the limited number of pre-reg places there are in industry. Of course it doesn't hurt to get your foot in the door but they want more pharmacists in industry.

As Emmz said, there are VERY few pre-reg places in industry. I know of only 2 people (there may be a few more) in my year who have succeeded in securing a pre-reg place in industry. They managed to get a foot in the door by doing a summer placement with the respective companies last summer which our uni. helped put them in touch with.

Hold it right there everone.
I suggest you read these articles, which should tell you that pharmacy isnt just about community and hospital.

(it should be called 'industrial pharmacy: under the microscope' and there are also some very interesting articles on the side'

I agree with Emma, the industry wants more pharmacists as they have a broader knowledge than say somebody with a molecular biology degree.
At LSOP they said that not enough pharmacists go into industry.
does bradford not have places for industry?

Universities don't have places for industry it's just that some may have better links so this may be of gain when applying for placements.

If you're interested in industry, whatever uni you're at, get yourself out there and try to get some experience before you graduate. You need to get your foot in the door. Going to a university with 'strong industry links' isn't enough alone.

if you read the article on the link igave, it says there are about 1000 pharmacists in industry.
