Do I have to give my birth certificate to SFE?

Basically my passport is out of date, so their asking me to send my birth certificate. Do I send the original, and by the original I mean send them the whole book. Or do I photocopy a page?

This applies if you're applying for a maintenance loan and a tuition loan from SFEngland as an English resident. If you're not an English student then different rules and forms apply.
