Postgraduate distance learning eligibility

Most distance learning courses do not have a set timeframe for completion, instead saying something like "will take 1-5 years to complete". This flexibility allows someone to complete it full time in a year, or do it part time over several years. How do these work with the loan? If I intend to complete the course in a year, do I count it as a 1 year degree?
