Yeah . Thing is not really looking for an o band role. Never going to get anywhere close to tsp progression or salary for that matter.

Not true. I know quite a few HMRC tax specialists and many people who have been/are in other roles within HMRC. One person I know has been promoted 3 times within 2 years.
There are also schemes within HMRC (such as Embrace, Leap(or some name similar to that)) which help you progress and develop skills in order to be promoted.
Whilst the path isn't as straight forward as the TSP path, you can progress just as quickly through hard work and used of the many resources available.

'Just as quickly' is a bit of a stretch. It's extraordinarily unlikely - all but impossible - that someone will get promoted from band O, or even HO, to G7 within 3 years. Mainly because they wouldn't have done the learning required for a G7 post, but also because of the lack of opportunities to demonstrate the competencies and behaviours required in such a short time. Even for a non-technical (managerial, strategic, etc) G7 post it's incredibly unlikely.

Just trying to manage expectations. Whereas it's relatively easy to get promoted to O or HO these days, the jump from HO to G7 is a massive one - as indicated by the massive jump in pay - and not as straightforward. It shouldn't be assumed that because someone's gone from, say, AO to HO in a couple of years they can expect to go from HO to G7 in the same time.

There are plenty of highly skilled people in HMRC who have been HOs for years - decades even - who can't get G7 jobs.

This was the impression I was under and what I have been told. It's classic tsr really people saying things that just don't have a basis or as you say make giant leaps so to speak to prove their point whislt disproving others.

For those who got onto the Band O Reserve List, a question. The e-mail listed a crapload of job references, and at the bottom, stating the cities to which those jobs were for. If my city isn't listed on the bottom, can I just assume that there will be no O band jobs offered to me at all?

I never said that you will be promoted from O band to grade 7 within 3 years. I get what you mean about managing expectations but what I said was what people can expect.
I mentioned that someone I know was promoted 3 times within 2 years as an example that the TSP is not the only way to progress as a tax specialist within HMRC. I also gave some insight in how to achieve this once working for HMRC (through programmes such as EMBRACE, LEAP and hard work etc).

Basically, all I stated was that the Gingerwizard was wrong in stating that there is no way of getting near to the salary or progression without being on the TSP.
I'm not saying that everyone who joins HMRC at O grade is going to be promoted to grade 7 within 3 years, but it is possible for those who are hard working, dedicated and who make use of the programmes within HMRC can progress fairly (but obviously not as) quickly.

Similarly, you are required to pass your TSP assessments to progress within the programme. You can't simply join the TSP and cruise through to grade 7 either.

Wonder how many people thought after their AC they did well overall (enough to get a spot), me personally I think I did wack haha (ok here and there and rubish here and there) I'll probably be the person who kicks starts next years TSP18 thread haha didn't find it easy at all! Very challenging but fair process.

I feel exactly the same 🙈 I just felt everyone in my group was great... I honestly won't be surprised if they all got a space... me on the other hand ... maybe next time lol guess we will find out end of march
I'm trying not to make any predictions to be honest because if I did I think it would drive me mad. Either way I think I actually enjoyed my time at the assessment centre. There were some really great dead on people there who would really deserve it and actually made the day enjoyable, we were almost inseparable at the end.

Hey, I see you were also in Warwick on the 22nd and 23rd. Which team were you on? I was on the red team and quite enjoyed the whole experience. I really hope I have done enough to get on the programme. This is my second time applying and the last time I didn't make it pass stage 2 but got offered a band O job off the back of my application.
I was on blue. First time applying so I was pretty shocked to get this far to be honest. Good luck though hope you do well.
Just wanted people's thoughts on the o band roles. Most of them are operational front line managers. Is it easy/possible to transfer to a role as a tax professional from operational roles such as this?

Thank you and good luck to you too. I guess there's not much we can do now but to wait and see.

Yes, it can be done but compliance roles are often advertised with 2 or 3 years compliance experience and/or relevant qualifications as essential criteria, which would rule out FLMs. That said, it's more common these days for them to be desirable rather than essential. And given that many external applicants are now being appointed directly into compliance roles, lack of experience/qualifications isn't necessarily a barrier.

Thanks. I ideally want to work as a tax professional, but don't want to pass up the opportunity of being employed by HMRC if I get a front line manager role!
Can those who have been to Coventry/Warwick Uni please answer these questions

when the first day finishes at 5.30pm....is it straight into dinner? Then after dinner what did people do? It says there is leisure facilities was just wondering what these are as if there is a gym then I'd quite like to use it.

Also when day 2 starts at 8.30am....is breakfast before this or at 8.30? Quite an early start for an event like this I thought but I suppose with everyone staying on campus then people would normally be starting work by that time.

Thanks in advance and good luck

Hi findmeinthepub,
Dinner was at 7pm. No idea on leisure facilities sorry, we were all knackered and headed back to our rooms after dinner! Breakfast from 7am activities actually start at 8.30am. Good luck!

There was an "exercise room". Only reason I know is because I saw it on route to my room. I was knackered after dinner too, so there was no way I was going to the gym.
Is anyone in Warwick march 2nd and 3rd
I know a man who is.
Anyone in Lincoln 1st and 2nd of March? This is my first assessment ever! Beyond nervous!
