Dunno, he wasn't that good in the end though was he  :p:
If you think EE is amazing, check this out.

A guy from my school got an UNCONDITIONAL offer from Oxford...for Politics AND History (major/minor or double major, not sure).

Bloody hell.

He WAS a freaking genius though...5 As at A Level, won the Brown Book Award, represents our school at all the big national debating events, VERY outspoken...and a member of the British socialist party (or some equivalent of that). Not that that really has anything to do with anything, but you know. You can tell this guy stands out by a mile.

Money? Royalty? Magic?

A guy from my school (a bog standard comprehensive) got an offer of 2 E's to do physics at Oxford. I just wondered how this sort of thing happened.

He did get an amazing mark at AS, I mean I got 280 ish but I think he was very nearly on 300, (ruddy coursework eh?).

Within the past eight years or so, three people from my school got offers of EE for Oxbridge. I think that's because it's a bog standard comp, as yours is - and it's designed to get people who have the potential, but not neccessarily the schooling to get AAA (bearing in mind that those three are about half of the school's successful Oxbridge applicants, and standards were pretty low - we ticked all the right boxes as a 'disadvantage background.')
Mind you, the three people were all exceptional, and most likely got the same sort of UMS as the guy you mentioned, which would seem to defy the point!
My dad, who's now 48, got an offer from Oxford of 2 Es, given the year before he finished his a-levels. This was to read engineering science.
He didn't have a brilliant academic or EC background, or much of a disadvantaged family or anything along those lines...BUT He took the entrance exam and interview a year early (year before his A-levels) and made a great impression! This was despite a prediction of ABB.For his last year of school, my dad went to about 10 classes in total, as teachers didn't find it necessary for him to attend.

...he got AAB, and he ended up with a high 2.1 (having attended 5 lectures and classes in his first 2 years)

FUMING JEALOUS.
2 people at my school got EE offers from Cambridge this year.

Presumably from Christ's?
Yeah, maths and natural sciences.
Back when I entered Oxford in 1990, it was pretty standard to get a EE offer. You had to sit an entrance exam for Oxford entry, if you passed that you had to go to an interview there. The theory was, passing those two hurdles was more difficult than A levels, so there was no need to set specific grades. Cambridge was different, even though they had exams (and I think interviews) they also required usually 3 A's. There were no A*s at that time.
