Religious Studies and Scripture Reference

Whenever giving a scripture reference by using a quote do you have to put that weird number or a verse number idk. But if you remember a quote, is it enough?

you don’t have to give the exact chapter and verse references.

for example if you’re picking a quote which is Genesis 1:4-5, just say ‘in Genesis, it states....’ then give the quote. it’s quite good to know the book (Genesis) but you don’t need to remember the chapter and verse (1:4-5)

You need to reference that it's from a scripture, so you should write 'In the Bible/Qur'an it states...'. Also, you need to make sure that what you say isn't too vague. Here are a couple of examples of how you can paraphrase the quotations:

“In the Bible it says that God created us in his image”
'In the Qur'an it says that Muhammad is the seal of prophets'
