Mechanical engineering at Bath or Bristol?

Hi! I got offers from both Bath and Bristol. I have visited both unis however I like them both! I can't decide between them even though one is a campus uni and the other a City one. I was just wondering if people could help me with this decision.

Hi, I applied to both unis and ended up firming Bath. They're both very high up in the league tables and good universities for mech eng however I found myself firming Bath because A.) a placement year is guaranteed and from what I've heard its links to industry are better. B.) I like the idea of living in Bath, being a world heritage site and having visited it the city is very beautiful. This depends on you as a person but both cities are quite close together and easily accessible by train so it shouldn't be your only consideration.

Is the placement guaranteed if I didn't choose the year in placement course?

Have you got a source on the placement year being guaranteed? Bath are very good at getting people on placement but I doubt they would guarantee it unless they're including placements based on projects at the university, which unfortunately some universities do.

I'm not sure if the links to industry are any better, I'd say the links for all three of UWE, Bristol, and Bath are pretty similar with Bristol and UWE having a slight advantage for Robotics.

Agreed on Bath being a very nice city though, it's really great as student cities go.

I'm not really sure how to help OP if they've visited both as the city is the usual determining factor between the two, it's kinda difficult to differentiate between them if they like both.

Sorry I worded it wrong, from what I gathered at the applicant visit day you have have to secure your own placement (only if you intend to do a year industry, you can choose whether you'd like to do this up until the end of second year) but they support you throughout the entire process and given the reputation of the uni within in industry its unlikely you won't be able to secure one.
My son graduated M.Eng at Bath last year - he did a year out in industry.
You do indeed have to find your own placement, so you need to get off your backside and make the effort.
That being said it's a BIG thing at Bath so they put a lot of effort into helping students find a place, and they have extensive contacts.
I believe most people that want one, and put in the effort, get one.

Many firms come back to Bath again and again for their next intake of graduate engineers.
Once you've hired someone it's very difficult to get rid if they prove to be duffers.
With a placement, if it doesn't work out, you shake hands, wish them luck and promise them a nice write up...and you're done.
Many firms look at the placements as year long interviews.

Hope this helps.

Bristol has better reputation, and nightlife.
Bath, is a good Uni (but if u prefer the lifestyle there pick it)

If you want a career in a big manufacturer or engineering company, it will make very little difference
If u want to work in financial services, or an LLP type company, Bristol is probably more well regarded

EDIT: Also i did a placement year (im a mech-eng student, but i've never studied at either of these Uni's tho):
Getting placements is not hard to get providing you practice online tests, prep for interviews and 'target' each application, i ended up with a couple different offers for placements and got to pick. I must of made 25/30 applications 10 interviews 3 job offers.
Don't decide your Uni choice based on placements, shouldn't make a difference in your ability to secure one.

With regards to better reputation, is this the reputation for unis in general of mechanical engineering specifically? Also does this mean that it is easier to get a job at a good company if i go to bristol?

In general Bristol is considered a better generally reputation wise.
In engineering they are pretty similarly
Job prospects = in engineering companies
Bristol is better for a wider range of career opportunities
(and personally i think its a better Uni, lifestyle wise)

Here is the 2019 Uni highflyer guide, Bristol is always a top target Uni as stated in here:

here it shows you, ignore Complete Uni guide, times, guardian rankings. This is actual employers rankings...

Bath has a better rep for Engineering - they also do well in the Formula Student competition [designing racing cars].

no this is the highflyers guide.
But getting a job in engineering/manufacturing/R&D does not make a big difference what Uni your at (bristol v bath, pretty much equal as i stated).
But if u want a job outside of engineering Bristol is better generally...

I think it's misleading to post it on this thread - Bath is better for Engineering/Maths than Bristol. Do Bristol take part in Engineering competitions like Formula Student?

as do Bristol (and almost every UK University with a reasonable intake of undergrad engineers)

Bath has a better rep for engineering though and is rated the best university in the south west. Besides, people seriously underestimate the importance of the placement year. Bath have been at it for a long time so they've got a stellar network of companies that head hunt their good students

Only makes a difference for careers outside engineering

hence the importance of the placement year scheme....experience counts for a lot in engineering. Where better to get that experience alongside your degree than at university that literally specialises in it?

Not really because if u want to work in engineering, it wont make any difference what Uni OP picks.
But if 3/4/5 years OP decides he would rather work in a different sector but now has an engineering degree, Bristol will offer better prospects.
And Yes both Bath & Bristol do Formula student

i don't you have ever done a placement year? You can basically do one at any Uni if you do MEng/BEng Engineering degree, you apply for the jobs, attend the interviews, and turn up to work. If OP goes to Bristol he will do the same things to get a placement year.
