i reckon ethnicity for the big boy
Reply 2
Hmm why's that ?
my teacher said labelling and right realism
My teacher predicts something on theory, but Crime and Deviance is such a hard paper to predict because the exam board love to pull surprises.
right realism? that isn't ringing any bells! i'm hoping theory, or perhaps class (white collar crime, marxism and all that jazz!).. not that I've even started revision yet!

I hope it's statistics.
Reply 6
yeah stats, but i doubt it because its come up a few times. I reckon just plain and simple theory.
Reply 7
wouldnt mind if the 40 marker was crime and gender! it would be easy to link to education and religion providing you have done those topics
Reply 8
nooo not gender :frown: decided to not revise it at all !!! eeek

my teacher marks exams for some reigon and she knows the chief examiner and she said that she heard someone say "if its not ethncity i will eat my hat" , who knows!
Oh dear. I hope it's not ethnicity... I don't think I know much about that :|
I quess comparing Quantitative and Qualitative methods could be good. Or Suicide.
Or comparing Functionalist/Marxist theories of crime. Hmm.

2bh all we can do is cover every topic, just be confident on a couple. i find that you can manipulate many questions to what you know.
There's quite abit to write about for ethnicity thinking about it
Stuart Hall- Afro Carriabean
Cohen- White working class? Its hard to tell if the functionalist subculturalist actually pinpointed to any specific ethnicity.
Chambliss- didn't he study afro carriabeans in Seattle? Sorry he did a study of the police and politicians, but you can use this as evidence of the White, upper class being able to get away with crimes.
Marxism- White Middle class with White collar crime and corporate crime.
Interactionists- Cicourels 'Negotiation of justice' say how white middle class can negotiate their way out of being charged, whilst white and ethnic working class don't have the 'know how' link in to education with the middle class mother.

You can bring in some bits of religion with Fundamentalism and NRMs such as penticostalism, methodism, rastafarianism, that is if they ask for deviance.

Meida- Moral panics- Islamaphobia.

Theres probably more but i can't think.

When talking about ethnicity dont forget about the statistic side of things

Bowling and Phillips - study of official crime stats ( Ethnic minorities are 5x more likely to be stopped and search, 4x more likely to be arrested, 6x more likely to be imprisoned.
Prisons - blacks make up 1.8% of the general population but 12.1% of the prison population.
Taken from combination of two revision guides.

Charlie - Incorrect! It was chambils that studied in Seattle, he talked about Politicions, Businessmen, and Policemen were embezzling in ilegal activities such as pornography, prostitution and drug dealing. The law enforcement system highly ignored it. Organised CRIME

Cicourel studies the ruffnecks and the saints. Saying that the ruffnecks were lower w/c lived in a deprived area, which was policed highly and were likely to make more arressts because of that. The saints were middle class, very respectable by the authority and legal system. Their crime was they used to put barriers on end of dangerous clifts, which often cars swerved and crashed. But the authority and legal system did not prosecute them because they come from respectable and stable backgrounds. They prosecute more w/c individuals. This is the negotiations one.

yay for :tsr2: cheers emma

thanks my teacher told me the wrong thing then,,, iil get out the big haralambos and change my notes
Reiner came up with the concept of the 'typical criminal' who are usually young men who are unemployed and from generally discriminated against ethnic minorities. The police are more likely to see the activities of young men from lower levels of class structure and from certain ethnic minorites as suspicious.

Cicourel also did a study of police and juvenile officers in California which illustrates Reiners point. Both groups had a picture of the 'typical deliquent'. As a result young people who fitted this picture were more likely to be arrested and handed over to juvenile officers. And in turn those who came closest to the picture of the 'typical delinquent' were more likely to be charged with a criminal offence by the juvenile officers. The middle-class minority who were arrested were usually 'counselled, cautioned and released' by the juvenile officers.

just checked haralambos the saints and ruffnecks is chambliss, page 343 for those who have it.

from my revision cicourel in talks about justice is negotiable and how statistics are created by law enforcement agencies. (thats just it in brief)
Reply 18
thats how stats are highly underestimated because they only focused on w/c crime. Which was subjective by the law enforcement and those in authority.
Selective Law enforecement of the working class especially those of the ethnic monrity has lead tostatistics showing that there is significantly more street crime being committed than upperclass crime.
