I'm planning on starting English Literature in September and Im a boy

Coming from a course that was made up predominantly of boys I won't be complaining if im the only one!
Out of the 5 people in our class, 3 of us our boys and there are two girls. Last year however in AS, there was 16 students, 6 of us were boys, 10 were girls.

My AS English Language class last year was the most unbalanced, out of a class of 12, I was the only boy!!
the advantage of being one of few boys is if you want to play devil's advocate and criticise feminism in any way everyone's feathers get ruffled

oh also, look at the number of female teachers compared to male teachers in literature. at my college, english is the biggest department by a long way and there are no male teachers

On a slightly different note, how big on average are your AS classes? Do the numbers drop considerably at A2 level?

Just wondering as I will be starting my A-Levels at college this September

no, in advanced extension award. we were discussing w.b. yeats' leda and the swan and the images of rape etc. and most of the girls were getting up in arms about how all men fantasise about rape so i simply suggested that maybe they do too, and that leda certainly seemed to be in the poem
7 in my class with two of us being guys. Actually, 8 this year, one of my male mates has come back from college to 6th Form. So it's currently 5:3 for the girls, one or two girls might drop it.

Usually girls pick the more literary-arty subjects, boys go for the more analytical ones. However, in net quizes I usually end up having a female-type brain (25% of guys do) and study Eng Lit, History and French.

Mind you, I am probably the best in my class, save one girl who also does drama, she and I are about equal.

Vis a vis Duffy - I'm lucky, I've been doing Dannie Abse for the past year, absolutely brilliant and rather masculine in his internal conflicts.
My English Lit class is something like 25 boys, 5 girls.

The other English Lit class in my year is 17 boys, 3 girls.

Although the year group is 100 boys/ 40 girls.
Theres more boys in our Lit class... but that probably becaue the ratio of boys to girls is 3:1 in the whole scool.
Lol.
Our class (A2) had 13 girls and 1 boy and the other class had like 14 girls and 2 boys and in AS there were like 15 girls and 2 boys in our class and again about 16 girls in the other class and only 1 boy.

Well, considering you go to St. Margaret's I'm not surprised.

Although the ratios are odd..
A lot of boys tend to prefer subjects like Maths, Physics & Economics to subjects like English Lit... I can't comment on class ratios because I go to an all-girls school, but from what I know of my male friends, more of them do stuff like Maths & Physics than English Lit...although a fair few of them do it.

Makes sense, English Lit seems to be one of the most extreme cases though, in terms of gender division

woo!

oh wait i have 3 years (at the very least) left
I would definitely say it is female dominated. There are three classes in our year for English lit, so around 50 people. It started off with about four boys, and only oen actually went all the way through the A2 course! However, I should add that my school is all girls up until sixth form, so in the school as a whole there's only around 12 boys for 90 odd girls.
Only one boy in our year that took english lit to A2.
Oh, and we didnt get to choose what we studied. It was a bit of a mix really.

Two Shakespeare which are fairly gender neutral
Chaucer which is smutty and immature, so we all enjoyed it.
Wise Children...again, incestuous granny porn so it was interesting...
Bell Jar is apparently a more female orientated book, but we all hated it equally
All my Sons was the opposite, a more boyish play but everyone despised it.

If you're the only boy in the class, then be preparedfor a lot of teasing whne you read smutty bits, or particularly feminist bits. My teacher was a terrible misogynist, and used to taalk to the only boy in an all boys together kind of way about how useless we women are and how them men were better,

I go to an all girls school - so out of four in the class, four of us are unsurprisingly girls. looking at my freshers group on facebook though, there's 12/34 who are boys. still a minority but not soo soo tiny.

eta: I also resent the implication that if given the chance, females will choose "romantic crap".
