Focus on reading the material from the textbooks which are suggested by the lecturer. Practice as many examples as you can. Take your first year seriously because most of the material will be used in subsequent years.

Be very bright or revise hard throughout you course. It some combination of this. I guess on the grades you have to be in the top of the distribution.
