Which members'/gentlemen's club should I join in London?

I'm looking to join a members' club in London. I am open to any with a reasonable membership fee (under 1000 quid a year), any that you guys would reccomend?

Also, does anyone have any insight into the East India club, the Royal Automobile Club and the Oxford and Cambridge Club?

Bear in mind that it's very common for applicants for membership of these clubs to require a proposer and a seconder from the existing club membership.

What are you hoping to gain from your membership?

Mainly a quiet place to get some work done, but if the place also offered a gym that would be even better

Couldn’t you go to a library for that?

I'm not sure you really know what a club is. Was putting the RAC a joke, or...

That's called a library. Or college.

If you are looking for something more like a Pall Mall Club, the Army and Navy Club might be a better place to start. I have been to some talks there on military history and was given some details of membership while I was there. I got the impression that they can, on occasion, take applications from people who are suitable but who do not yet have a proposer from within the club.

Think carefully about whether this is really what you are looking for, though, there might be other, cheaper options.

For what it's worth, I do a lot of my research at the British Library and the Wellcome Library, both of which are quiet.

What will you be doing in London?

They’re not that special/worth the money in my opinion. My dad’s a Carlton member but hardly ever goes. I personally have no interest in going out my way to join one.

Also, people go there to socialise, not to work. As people mentioned above, just go to a library.

One of the best ways to work out which members clubs would be most suitable for you would be something like Capital A List where you get access to a number of different private members clubs among other special perks.
