Which one of these unis should I go to?

I was meant to resit this year but obvs that isn't happening so ive been applying through clearing with last years results for computer science. I got offers from: Essex, Keele, ARU, DMU, Kent, Brunel & Hull. Out of all these which is the best university, good student life isn't a requirement for me so im looking to go somewhere which will land me a good job.
I don’t study at any of the above universities but when I was deciding which uni to firm I thought about which one offers the best course for me/one I’m interested in the most (looked at the modules on offer at each uni). I think employment figures for each universities graduates should be available online somewhere, it may also help with your decision.

I hope this helps

Hi there!

Here at Keele, 96% of computer science graduates were in further study or a job within 6 months of graduating from their course in 2017! There’s also a huge range of employers who have recently employed graduates from Keele. These include company’s like Rolls-Royce and British Airways! You can find out more about the career prospects and employers that can come from graduating at Keele using this link - https://www.keele.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/undergraduatecourses/computerscience/#career-prospects

I thought you might find it helpful in making your decision?

If you have any other questions or queries about Keele then please don’t hesitate to ask!
I absolutely agree that what is most important is the structure of the course. Have a look at the modules, the amount of practicals, the facilities (with computer sciences you want to spend a good amount of time in a PC lab and ideally in a brand new PC lab).
You have a bit of a mix of universities, Essex, Kent, Brunel are internationally recognised and have a strong research environment, the others are not as international and their ranking is significantly lower (https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2021).

Among those 3, Essex is probably the one with the strongest Computer Science Department, both in facilities and connection with industrial partners. It is a University campus with 15,000 students living in the campus, so you have everything, pubs, shops, restaurants, clubs, sport centre. The campus is very green and it is very lively. Very good facilities, very friendly and welcoming. Here you can see a virtual tour of the campus https://www.essex.ac.uk/life/colchester-campus . If you want more info about Essex, the best thing to do is probably to chat directly with students and staff via https://www.essex.ac.uk/life/chat

Hey there,

I am a final year BSc Marketing student in the Business School at the University of Kent (Canterbury campus). It's great to hear you have been offered place here at Kent, although I do not have personal experience, two of my housemates studied BSc Computer Science and had great experiences. One has recently accepted an excellent Junior Developer job in Central London and the other has decided to stay on at Kent and complete his Masters in Cyber Security!

Course content - I would suggest checking out the exact modules offered at all of the universities you are interested in to see if they vary and if some are more preferable for your interests/ career prospects. Here at Kent you can complete what is called a 'themed degree' where you can specialise in one particular area of interest; for example we have 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'Networks' options. Also, if you are considering completing a placement year it will be important to see which universities offer this as it can be a great way to enhance your employability options. I would also say check the teaching and assessment methods for the course to see which are best suited to your method of learning/ being examined. Some universities may take a more theoretical approach while others may have more hands on experience based group learning so depending on your preference. I would also recommend taking the time to ask one of our Computer Science students about their experience and what to expect with our Unibuddy service: https://www.kent.ac.uk/unibuddy/.

Course ranking - Just a few quick stats based on the course ranking for you to consider too: Computer Science at Kent scored 91.9 out of 100 in The Complete University Guide 2021 with over 92% of Computer Science graduates who responded to the most recent national survey of graduate destinations in professional work or further study within six months (DLHE, 2017). In which case, according to the Complete University Guide, the University of Kent scores highest out of your specified choices (https://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings/computer-science).

I hope this helped give you an idea of Computer Science at the University of Kent. If there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to ask!

Good luck,
-Connie
